i believe Sony is not worried about that, and that there will be a ps4 sooner then you think, because we all know that ps3 will still be selling in 5 years like water in the desert.

Companies in the hardware industry tend to make a loss producing hardware at the start, as they know (usually) that they can recoup losses with game sales. Nintendo isn't making a loss with the Wii per console, as it was relatively inexpensive to make, using current gen (but still good) graphics tech. They spent time and money designing a new and already imitated input method. say what you want about wii but it is a financially safe product, and it has created a big buzz for taking a different path.

you have to think, they might lose between 240 - 300 bucks per console at the current moment. The cpu, gpu, and memory prices to build the ps3 will eventually drop low enough, so they will only have to sell 5 - 10 games to make profit.

Lets put it a way you may understand better. Sony has spend thousands and thousands of dollars designing their Cell technology, bluray, and the other features and hardware in the PS3.Now, to get that money back - they must sell a certain number of systems. After they have sold that amount, every console they sell after that will be a profit for Sony.

Lol, you guys don't know what your talking about 'Sony must lose money on their console so I can flame them even though I'm making s**t up' They don't lose any money on the consoles you stupid wanks. Give me a reliable source that says they do.

Wow some people are stupid. Sony and every game developer will not make any money. In order for a game to make profit it needs to sell 500000 games each. Sony is losing $250-$300 on each system. There will be less than 500000 PS3's, and not every body is going to but every game. So pretty much it is screwed. Sony has a lot of money though.

Sony has to sell only 500,000 systems to make a profit.

"Anonymous at 21:4 1/12/2006 How is MegaGames biased?"Maybe their not bias, but if you look at the long term picture, I believe they would more often then not talk about the problems with the PS3 then any other "next gen" console. I might be wrong, but its just something I noticed with Megagames and their news articles.

Anonymous @ 13:53Yeah, I didn't see who wrote that but that's definately wrong. Sony needs to sell 25 games per console (assuming they get royalties of $10 per game) to turn a profit. Not 30. Sony loses $240 with the sale of each console.

this probably has something to do with sony stating the ps3 should be around for 10 years, so naturally there gonna go into software or something. as long as they can make a profit they'll make consoles.

The original playstation only sold because it was easy pirate. And once all the ChavSc*m got a taste of gaming they stuck to it and brought the gaming world down to it's s**tty, STD infested, single mother level.

Yuta Sakurai is a financial analyst, not a gamer. From the exec reshuffle he's noticed a software guy get leadership and assumed that Sony are going to go a software route because the same happened with SEGA. If he had been a gamer he'd probably remember that SEGA's first party games were their most popular whereas the opposite is true of Sony.Sony will continue to build consoles and continue to work with 3rd party developers to bring the widest and best gaming library possible to those consoles.

sony needs 30 titles per PS3 to make proffit. Yeah, id say PS4 looks a bit arguabl. I personaly dont like sony nor PS3, but them also droping out of the game will lead to monopolic prices by microsoft so I do hope nothing as such will be.

How is MegaGames biased? They are simply reporting on a game related event. As it says in the article, the prediction of no PS4 was stated in the financial times and was quoting from Yuta Sakurai.Bias would be agreeing with the financial times article even before Sony has made any long term plans. The Sony statement basically says that as long as there is profit to be made they will keep making consoles. So as far as drawing a conclusion, any intelligent person knows we’ll have to wait and see how the PS3 fairs in the long term to know what Sony may do in regards to a PS4.

The demand for the console stemmed from its resellability, not playability. duh.literally.. a majority of people who bought the ps3 only did so to resell it for immense amounts of cash. we'll see what the ps3 has to offer in the future, but for now, it's just a very pretty grill.
