This seems to me to have alot of potential for those who want to play divx etc but i think the high price tag will make it a fumble, it will be interesting to see how it changes the ability of the console to play "backup" games as we may now be able to boot from the OS. But its still 400 bucks australian and until there is a massive price drop i would rather spend the money on the messiah modchip or a dvd burner.

Obviously, to all you naysayers, if even 1/10th of the 9000 people who signed the petition actually got into developing games-the PS2's game library would explode with low cost (and yes, sure, low quality for some) games. You have to remember PS2 is Sony's SECOND attempt at something like this, not third or fourth or-like microsoft-an expansion on technology already present...anything Sony does in this respect is quite good for them, and for those who dont need it-dont buy it. As it says directly in the article-its for those who want it-all sony wants is to cover the development costs. This isn't really meant to get people to buy PS2's, this is meant to get those users advanced enough to maybe expand themselves into a whole new world.

You can do this already on a dreamcast. Buy one really cheap on ebay. You can play mp3, surf the web, play divX and VCD's and run linux and netbsd.

So programming is gay? Without programming you wouldn't even have your useless response to post. Think before you speak. And bobby, I think you can find the linux kit on the European playstation site. If you need a currency converter then try out a site like www.xe.com.

This is only to give all you happy nerds out there a chance to spend more time infront of a screen doing really gay things like programing. Don't buy this shit. Save you money and do something worthwhile

What do you think your average pc is designed for.. duh graphics and number crunching of course. I think it'll run linux perfectly.

Waste of time if you think that buying this kit will turn your ps2 into a pc then you are sadly mistaken. The ps2 is not designed for doing a range of complex tasks it is designed for graphics and number crunching relevent to that task asking it to do something else you are going to get poor performance. Even the processor is risc and although very powerfull at what it is ment for will be pretty shite at anything else. If you want to do pc things buy a pc there are no shortcuts.

Sony fumble? Waste of money? What are you talking about? The potential of running Linux on your ps2 could be endless. Imagine being able to run mp3's, divx movies, etc, on your television set. Even using emulators to run old console games on your ps2. All the extras bundled with the linux cd makes it worth the purchase alone (especially if you already own a ps2 and want it online worthy). Its also something for anyone who's an amateur programmer, developer, or just wants another pc in their home to tinker with or even network. And its not like sony is going to sell this at every local Walmart, only in limited quantities to those who desire it. I commend sony for putting out a great product.

this is purly an (linux) enthusiast's toy. Why anyone would want to pay for linux on their PS2 when they could have it on a PC for free is beyond me. But, when you consider that you get the keyboard, mouse, monitor cable, hard drive and network card, 199 isn't such a bad deal. I think this isn't a flop, but a triumph. Sony is considerate enough to make products to satisfy their customer groups. Shows that they care about the little guy.

I think one phrase here sums up this release 'unless, and expensive'. I don't buy consoles to use Linux on them, nor does this change my mind and make me want to buy said console. The only advantage of this is the harddrive, and for $199? That's too much. Another Sony fumble.

i think its a waste of money getting this kit it will probably cost around £400 and the internet will be so basic and dull then you have to think about how much it costs probably £1 a minute or sumthin like that anyway nice site for cheats cheers ;-)

Now all the people with ps2's can run their machine like they would a computer. And the nice part is..your televison can be your monitor! and you can do all your computing from the living room!
