If anyone can still find a 9500pro then they are lucky. This is still the best mid-range card out there. Beats the 4200ti, 4600ti, 5200Ultra, 5600Ultra, 4800ti, 9600pro. And mods easily to a 9700pro.

Good to know i thought Toms Hardware had some good info but il be going to these new sites from now on. By the way i got a ATI Radon 9800 Pro 128MB card and my girlfriend has got a NIVIDIA FX5200 64MB and for the price difference the fx5200 plays vice city smoothly so i guess the FX5900 is as quick as 9800 Pro. At the end of the day ATI and NIVIDA both knock out some powerful cards it just down to choice.

"This weekend at the Million Man Lan 2 (MML2) this usual series of events was shifted due to manufacturer and media company coming to their own terms. It started when I was attempting to attend the MML2 event, in Louisville, KY. I was told by a representative of AMD that I was not going to be allowed to even enter the building because Tom’s Hardware (THG) had forced a media blackout for all other online press. That means that as a member of the press, I was not allowed to enter the building, take photos or write about the hardware events that would occur inside. Needless to say, I was not happy when I heard about this turn of events."Ya. Tom's Hardware is a unbiased source of reviewing. lol. What a load of Bullocks. That site has been giving positive reviews for years to Manufacturing companies that give it free shit. This whole thing is another f**king scandel. And Tom's Hardware is one of the causes. I will never go to that site again. They sleep with the people that give them free shit to review. I want unbiased reviews. Biased ones serve to f**k us consumers. Period!

"The GeForce FX5900 Ultra could have been a large hit of nVidia, but the progressive Shader and the drivers unfortunately make still another line calculated by the calculation. Despite clear superiority on the paper the FX5900 Ultra is not able it to dissociate itself crucially from the Radeon 9800 pro. More still, it is referred around other time to the places - up can not overhaul however."And it's plainly clear also, if the 5900 Ultra was beating the 9800pro across the board as the PR department from Nvidia keeps saying, then why do they insist on cheating? Lowering IQ and floating point precision in tests? Will they do this in dx9 games? Because in order for them to run games that are dx9 compliant, it has to be done in FP24 the minimum. And the 5900 just does it in FP32 and FP12,FP16. They program their drivers for dx9 tests to run the application in FP12, FP16 so it runs faster. But IQ is lost compared to ATI'S solution. ATI always run's it in FP24. I for one do not want to spend $500 on a video card to get short changed in visual areas. And that is what Nvidia is doing to you lemmings. They are pulling a 3dfx scam. A few more FPS at the cost of IQ. ANvidia even pulled the old ATI cheat 3 years ago recently with dropping FSAA and AA in 3dmarks2003. Remember the Quack/Quake cheat by ATI? Nvidia has done the EXACT SAME THING WITH THE 5900ultra. Nvidia is cheating in the shader area game tests as the 5800, 5900 has a slower shader engine. And that seems to be the current future of games. Something Nvidia does not want you to know. Read reviews on this. And you WILL know! And Tom's Hardware these days is not exactly the best hardeware review site to go to. They are under fire for their biased approaches these days. They are not exactly reputable like the days of old.

"ConclusionLet's break down performance of both cards and see which one comes out on top. UT2k3 - FX 5900 Ultra - While both cards perform well, the FX 5900 comes out on top AquaMark - R9800 Pro - The R9800 takes home the gold in this real-world benchmark Comanche 4 - R9800 Pro - The R9800 also wins out by an edge for this nearly obsolete benchmark Specviewperf 7.0 - R9800 Pro - This one is really close but the #'s lean to the R9800 Code Creatures - FX 5900 Ultra - The 5900 beats up the R9800 pretty good in this intensive benchmark Splinter Cell - R9800 Pro - Hands down, the R9800 takes it in this awesome game from UBISoft ShaderMark - R9800 Pro - While the FX 5900 Ultra makes a good showing, the R9800 wins this one 3DMark 01 SE Build 330 - R9800 Pro - The R9800 takes top honors with this tried and true synthetic benchmark 3DMark 03 Build 320 - FX 5900 Ultra - Should we include this? Possibly not, however the FX 5900 wins with WHQL Det Drivers 3D Visual Quality - R9800 Pro hands down And the winner is.........The FIC ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. We compared these cards in every category we could think of and in the end, we saw better performance overall from the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Did the FX 5900 fail to impress us? No, not at all. We believe both cards are worthy of any good system but we do have to tip our hats to the excellent performance that the Radeon 9800 Pro has showed us here today." And that test was comparing the 5900 Ultra 256meg version to ATI'S 9800pro's 128meg version. The 9800pro held it's own and beat it in shader intense tests and other tests and is $100 dollars cheaper. So where you are getting this... "5900 beats the 9800 pro flat out." is so far from the truth. Go to the websites and look at the numbers.

"Looking at AA Quality, we came to the conclusion that the ATI 9800 Pro 256MB card still has hands down the best AA quality. You cannot beat ATI’s rotated grid with gamma correct AA. NVIDIA still uses an ordered grid sampling pattern on the NV35. They do get marks though for implementing Multi-Sampling + Super-Sampling modes. However, even though those options exist, ATI’s AA still looks better""Overall, when judging image quality, we have to give the hat to the 9800 Pro." "At 16XAF the ATI 9800 Pro 256MB looks awesome in games like Medal of Honor or Battlefield 1942. On the 9800 Pro 256MB we did not notice as many jaggies whereas on the 5900 Ultra, aliasing is quite apparent when you are given a static screen shot to gaze at. Where it is really important is duing movement in gameplay. We are going to look further into this with some following subjective opinion articles. Given those facts, the 9800 Pro still holds the IQ crown" "It almost seems like in every benchmark the cards go back and forth, dancing around each other. One map will run one card faster, another map will run the other one. One resolution shows a card faster, another resolution shows the other fast. It makes deciding which is the fastest card a very hard decision. Here we have an 8 pipeline card clocked at 380MHz beating in some cases a 4 pipeline card clocked at 450MHz with a lot of bandwidth. It appears in those situations that the 9800 Pro 256MB card just has a better architecture with faster shader speed." "Both cards offer exceptional performance, but if I have to place my finger on which card I would choose for my primary system that I play my games on, I would have to opt for the 256MB 9800 Pro. It has better AA quality, and can play at 6XAA on a 256MB card very easily. It has also proven to be very strong in shader operations."

i dont know about you guys but its all about picture quality now. any FPS higher than 60 is pointless so graphics have to be focused on quality, and even though the FX5900 beats the R9800Pro, the radeon still has a MAJOR edge over the nvidia when it comes to picture quality.

Ati came out with all the first. DX9, the first full 8 pixel pipeline, 256 bit memory. Nvidia just had to copy, but no matter. Ati's R420 will have something like a 800mhz core, DDR2 at 256 bit memory controller, a full 16 pixel pipeline and two TMU's per pass. Hell when Ati was asked what fabrication process they planned to use for the R420 they said possibly a 90nm.So f**k all of you faggot Nvidiots. Nvidia didn't even have an answer to the R300 for like 6 or 7 months. The Loki project also involves Synapps. Ati has better image quality

IT ALL REALLY DOESN'T MATTER. FLAGSHIP CARDS ARE JUST TO SHOW OFF, TO PROVE HOW REALLY ADVANCE THEIR COMPANIES ARE. YOU THINK THAT NVIDIA AND ATI MAKE THEIR REAL MONEY OFF THE THE NV35, R350, NV36, R360, NV40, R420. NO WAY IN HELL THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY OFF THE MAINSTREAM MARKET, AND RIGHT NOW ATI 9600PRO IS DOMINATING. IN MY OPINION THE R420 IS GOING THE CRUSH THE NV40, THERE HAS ALREADY BEEN DEVELOPMENTS THAT THE R420 CORE COULD POSSIBLY BE A 90nm FAB PROCESS. ATI IS KEEPING A VERY TIGHT LID ON THE THE PROJECT (LOKI). WHILE NVIDIA HAS RELEASED INFO REGARDING THE NV40 ALREADY. THE MOST INTERESTING PART OF ALL THIS IS THE FACT THAT SNYAPPS IS A PARTNER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOKI. NVIDIA WILL COME OUT WITH GREAT CARDS BUT NOT BETTER THAN ATI THOUGH, ALSO NVIDIA'S PRICES ARE JUST WAY TO HIGH.

Why don't you guys stop seeing it as "a new card to buy", but as "a new card that will drop the price of a lot of the almost-new cards". It's a great thing that they advance so fast because *no* games use the latest technology, so we can all enjoy games at full speed without buying the latest, most expensive piece of metal. Whether or not ATI or Nvidia is "better" shouldn't matter - wouldn't all those violent and loud ATI fans on these message boards just love to see a lot of "f**kheads" buy Nvidia cards? (and vice versa) Buy what you can afford now, not what you hope will maybe still be in use in 2 years' time. It won't. So go cheap now, and cheap then too.

The NV40 is overrated. The competition between these two big time companies is great for us gamers though. I can't confim this but there is word that the R420 is going to have a 16 pixel pipeline with two TMU's per cycle. Ati will be the first to do so, just like they were regarding the 8 pixel pipe. NV40 is going be tapped out from IBM, which is cool. However ATI is working closely with Synopps to create the R420. The NV40 is going to be a .13 fab, I wonder what the R420 will be there been talk that it even be as small as a 90 nm core. I think the R420 will dominate for a very long time!

Hah, Kirby, I totally agree with your post. It's sad that we live in a world where insults have to be thrown pointlessly, to offend perhaps one person it is directed at. Yeah, we got a lot of flamers here, both varieties, and it can be funny to read. Since I don't usually check these message boards, I wouldn't know if the others are like this, but if they are, then it's a sad world we live in indeed. If people saw the light (or came out of their parent's basements) just once, maybe things wouldn't be so embarassing. Oh, and check out my buddy's site at www.geocities.com/stuntvideo2003/intro , just 'cause it's funny. And that's all, people just need
to get lives or some friends besides their 'online buddies'.

This is fantastic news. I wonder though, if there ever will be a trend towards fully programmable video chipsets so they can do real-time raytracing in games. It seems there is a small hardcore bunch that think it may eventually replace the standard GPU concept - canned hardware routines in silicon. The best thing for me as a consumer is that with a new groundbreaking ATI card coming out, I will finally be able to afford an older 9500 Pro since resellers will be dumping them at discount prices. I loved my original Radeon but its getting long in the tooth and is destined for retirement.

Ya, It's over $600 in Canadian for the radeon 9800 but the 1 I saw is built by ATi. The one that you mentioned, is it a 3rd party radeon?.When it comes to video card prices in futureshop, its a total rip off now. But futureshop has awsome prices for video games and some other stuff. Now, enough of that. Heres 1 thing I forgot to mention in my last post about technolgy going to fast. This is 1 of the things that piss me off the most, we all know ati, nvidia can make a video card so powerful that can last for 10 years but they dont cuz they want to take it slowly so they can get more money out of you because upgrading is non-stop. This may sound stupid but if you understand it, it wouldnt sound so stupid. Another thing that pisses me off about nvidia and ati is that they dont make video card drivers to get the most of your video card because all they do is just make a bundle video card driver set. If ATi made a seperate driver for my radeon 8500 128 or for any other card they make, I bet I will be getting more performance then those driver packs.

Yeah, upgrades will be there always, however if you own a FX5900 or a 9800pro you can play for a lotof time its not like all games each year demand the new cards, hech the basic requiremens are always 32megs of Geforce 2 and Radeon so you can be sure that realesing the new cards wont afect manufacturers untli end of 2004 when they start thinking how to make incredible games using powerful graphis and still plaedble with the geforce4 so if you own a powerful card you are safe for like 3 years before games require alot of power and thus in 3 years youll have enough money to buy new one, i already got my 128mg Ati Radeon 9800 and im not planing to change it for the loki one nowhere near this year or next one. hech i eve got 1gb of dual channel 450mhz ram so ill be playing ok for a lot of time

so[m]ebody from the junkyard: Dude, for $4000 you could build 2 of the best boxes possible. Anybody who spends that much on a box is an idiot. And it's always been that way. You don't think I was disappointed when I got my 486DX/4 100MHz machine only to see the Pentium got to 266 or more and shortly after the Pentium 2 went even higher. It's the way it's always been and probably always will be.

Buckshot: Unless you're talking in non US dollars $600 for a 9800pro is a complete rip off. I could buy a brand new 9800pro for $370. It's the 128M version, but damn, $600 bucks is just FutureShop being greedy. I wouldn't buy it from them. That's for sure.

Look, after Intel's Prescott core, AMD's Athlon 64, PCI-X, ATI's Loki and Nvidia's R40 come out, PC's will go up the stairs to new techologies every second, so if anyone wants to buy a new PC in this year, won't run a normal game next year, and he will be aware that he bought a useless box for 4000$PS: just a warning

Yet another Gfx card that wont be maxed out in a game for 2 years by which time it will be 18 months out of date. Im fed up with all this technology bullshit! no game deveolper wants to put their neck on the line and bring out a game that makes the best use of new (and sometimes even old) graphics card technology because they dont want to alienate a potential gaming audience with older hardware. After buying a new graphics card on average every year over the last 7 years, all games are still looking almost the same for the last 3, only now are we seeing some good use of recent technology with UT2003, Doom3, HL2 etc...

Hmm, doesn't really bother me. I bought a GF3 Ti200 about 18 months ago for $AUD340 (about$170US at the time) and it still goes just fine. Sure, it can't run UT2003 full everything at a zillion fps, but who cares? What is it with ppl saying "oh, i can run 'x' at 200fps".......YAY......pitty you can only see like 24 of them - though i do grant that there is a difference visually between 30 and 60 fps.

i remember reading about pci express a while back. its backwards compatiable with all previous pci hardware (lan cards, modem, etc)through emulation. its 100x faster than pci and also cheaper to produce than existing pci boards. i also remember reading something about future board designs with pci express will support 10ghz cpus (the upper limit). i read about pci express last year, too lazy to track down the article again.as for the people who complain about companies "forcing" them to upgrade, thats the downside with competition. products advance too quickly and doesn't allow the consumer adequate time to enjoy their once "top of the line" stuff. But you get more for your money than buying products from the non-competitive market sector, although non-competitive market are more stable (refers back to the old 3dfx days).

No, ATI and Nvidia dont force us to do anything but the problem is new cards are released every 6 months now from nvidia and ati. And I bet we all get fed up and tired of the same bullshit because I do. I just went to futureshop and they were selling a 9800 radeon for over $600 smackers. Its probley not because futureshop wants to do it but rather more ATI boasting up the price tag on there video cards and its true.Last year, I got the top of the line ATI video card at its time and that was the Radeon 8500 128 and I paid $400 at futureshop for it but now, the top of the line ATi card is over $600 smackers at futureshop. Next year, ATi will be going to PCI express which 99% of the PC gamers will need to buy a new board and a new processor and more likely otehr stuff for it if they want to buy a new video card. I dont believe PCI express is that much faster then AGP but then again, I dont have any specs of pci express so it would be nice if someone can post real specs and facts of pci express.

Anyone who got ATI 9800 just wasted $500 for nothing. Now ATI plans to release their newer card. Typical of ATI.....trying to make you upgrade to the lastest & the greatest card.
