And if that is true, then ATI is one masterful engineering company. To put 16 pipelines on this card at only 160 million transistors is amazing. Nvidia is claiming that their 16 pipeline chip(if it's true) has 200 million+ transistors. Can you say 2 slot design again for Nvidia. WASTED SILICON AGAIN. Just like the 5800 design. More transistors means hotter running.

"ATi's upcoming R420 to sport 12 pipelines Marchitectural miracles By Fuad Abazovic: Δευτέρα 15 Μαρτίου 2004, 14:17 THE BIGGEST and most closely-guarded secret about ATI's upcoming R420 chip, in either R420XT or R420PRO guise, is the number of pipelines the chip will use. But now we can reveal that the R420 design features 12 working piplines from a possible maximum of 16." Yup. The graphics war is closer then expected. 12 PIPELINES OR 16 DEPENDING ON THE USE. And the R420 will support 6 Vertex shaders with that 12-16 pipeline core. Have to wonder how many Vertex shaders the NV40 will have, as this was one of 5950, 5900, 5800 major weaknesses. Lower vertex shader count then the 9700PRO, 9800PRO, 9800XT.

All this is rumor at this point. Nvidia is not even confirming the specs. Nvidia did this before with the FX line and called the card a true 8 pipeline card when it was in fact a 4x2 card. And ATI's R420 SPECS ARE STILL A SECRET. No one has any real details on the card yet. 16 pipelines on 0.13 die size; 200 million+ transistors running DDR2 memory; a core clock memory of 550mhz+? Maybe on 0.11 die size. But 0.13? Too fishy. Could happen. Doubt it though. The card would be uber expensive to produce, manufacture and keep cool. The card is going to be extremely hot and insane to run if this is true. I will hold my judgement until the card is released and the card is dissected. The 5800Ultra ran DDR2 which is hotter(miles hotter then DDR1) and WAS CLOCKED AT 500mhz and needed a dustbuster to cool it. And had less transistors and less pipelines. From this rumor, the NV40 will have triple the pipelines and more clock speed and hotter memory all on 0.13 micron???? Too fishy. Sounds like more PR hype. Good hype. But hype. Time will tell.......

I personally buy what is the best bang for the buck. Who cares if it is ATI or Nvidia. I want the what is going to perform the best for what I paid. I originally had a GF3Ti200 and it was a great card, then when I built my new system I bought a Radeon 9500 n/p with the 256 bit memory bus and enabled the other 4 pipelines. I haven't seen any card that could touch it's performance for $150 when I bought it. My next card for the money will be the Powercolor 9600XT. I don't really need the 9800 or the 5950 becuase when you are running around fraggin the hell out of everybody, whoever stops to apreciate the AA and A/F quality is going to be what? Dead LOL. The other thing is if your card can render the game @ 1600X1200 with AA and A/F dialed all the way up and still get 100 FPS will your eyes notice it, No. Will it be reasonably smoother as opposed to mine @ 1024X768 with the details on high with no AA or A/F? Maybe, but not by enough to warrant the extra $300 just to do that. If it is only so you can brag then if you have the money and want it go for it, but it isn't what you have it's how well you play that matters to all the Clans that I game with. Just go with does the best job for the money, and what works the best for your intended usage. I can't see spending $500 on a 5950 Ultra or a 9800 XT if you are a casual gamer, and spend most of your time just surfing the net when a 5200 or a 9200 will suit your needs just as well. I bought a 9200 SE with 128Mb VRam for the kids because it plays UT2003 good enough for them and because I got a better price on it than a 5200. Bottom Line - Everyone has their own opinion, Just buy what you want for you, works the best for your needs and don't worry about it.

210 million transistor ( I f**king doubt it)on a .13 fab. You can bet that the NV40 will run hotter than the sun. Even if the rumor about 16 ppl is true, it's not going to be a real factor, if ATI increase it's # of TMU's like to 4 per cycle. I have also heard that ATI has totally reworked their current 8ppl a 100% improvement over the last generation the call it extreme pipeline. However I cannot deny that fact that with 16ppl the NV40 will have more rendering power in theory.

What gets me is why ATI is keeping R420 specs a secret even at this point, not really much is know about the R420, hell we know more about the NV40 because Nvidia has released something. Even after the shocking news that Nvidia will be using a full 16 pixel pipeline (16x1) ATI is still keeping their R420 specs secret.

As for what I know, ATI did not want to go the 16 pixel pipeline route because they did not want their new high end R420 super expensive, also they did not want to risk yield problem over at TSCM.

the difference between the 2 cards will probably be so stupidly small theres no point even arguing over which is best. indeed nvidia messed up this time round with their dx9 problems but im sure that wont happen again. if you look back you will notice that the old radeon 9000 and the gf4 ti4600 had very little difference in performance. looking at the games that are being played now and how they perform on last years cards then you will see the difference is even less. i really dont see why nvidia and ati dont team up and make a range of cards. with their efforts combined and not fighting against each other they could come up with even better technology at cheaper prices and released sooner. they would make more money too as people wouldnt have to wait and see which is best before buying a card.

This all seems kinda fishy to me. As for what we know about the R420, is that it has around 50 million more transistors than the 9800 xt, and it's using a .13 fab process. The R420 will probably have more than one TMU, a higher clock obviously, but really it doesn't take 50 million transistor more to do all of this. I really doubt that Nvidia's NV40 has around 50-60 million more transistor than the R420, that seems kind of strange. I really believe that ATI also has an ace up their sleeve as well. Nvidia themselves haven't varified any specs on the NV40 so that 16 pixel pipeline thing could be bullshit. I'll believe it if it shows up on X-bitlabs.

prices better?? ha, gotta be kidding right? There's only one thing that'll be on Nvidia and ATI's minds right now, and that's building the next 'mega core'. Whatever they build, they gotta live with the fundenmental design of until the Video card industry is ready for the next jump. Which is why Nvidia got slumped in second place with ATI. They got stuck with a core design that robbed the cards of thier potential. Still holding my breath for both companies official specs. Don't fall for hype people. Fall for official benchmarks.

yes the 9800xt can be overclocked (20 to 30% increase to core and ram)a higher level of overclocking to the FX 5950, but every card is different and you could find a 9800XT that can only overclock at a 5% increase while the FX5950 could get a 20% over all increase.

OK. so nvidia are gonna have this killer gpu. wippee do da day. they have taken their time. think about it. how long have they been in the business compared to ATI? and now they are saying that the nv40 is gonna put ATI in the dust. think about it, surely with their experience they should be far in front but they are not. in fact they are still coughing up the dust left by the 9600pro and the 9800pro. and now the xt versions have come out promising excellent performance. as you can tell im an ATI fan. i think an ATI 9600 and P4 are the best combo for the lesser man. no-one can afford the only decent amd cpu. i bet it gets so hot that you could cook your breakfast on it in the morning. anyway i think nvidia should pull up their sox and work for a change.DATSUNS rule.

All of the games you listed are good games! And don't forget Call of Duty and especially Star Wars-Knights of the Old Republic. There are many more good ones on the way. Thief 3, Battlefield Vietnam and Medal of Honor-Pacific Assault come to mind. But there are some kick-ass older games you may want to consider. Freespace 2, Dungeon Siege, Crimson Skies, oh, and don't forget Descent 3. If you've never played Descent 3 you have missed one hell of a good looking game. And if your rig is hot enough to run Halo and Deus-ex2, you should be able to run Descent 3 in 1600x1200x32 with no problem! And it will be worth your time. I know that you asked for new games, but new doesn't always mean good. Many games from 2-3 years ago look drop dead gorgeous on new machines. And they flow man, they freakin' flow like buttah. And if you've never played 'em, they're new to you, right?

technology is going to fast. i upgraded recently. what games are worth playing now? deus ex2, halo, UT2k3, UT2k4, need for speed underground, doom3, half life 2, far cry, what else? i need help on finding some good titles. i mean, i didn't build this new comp so i can play ~5 dinky games and be left behind in the next major shift in computer performance standard.please list some games worth playing, new ones, that make use of directX 9.

*note* The Wildcat series of cards are pure opengl, but do have rudamentary d3d support, which is only accessible through emulated environments such as wineX or LimeX. the main reason they have so much memory is because of programs like 3dsmax, but mainly to deal with the anti-alaising and high amounts of vertices, i've worked with these cards a lot before, and their still excellent performers for graphics work.

Apart from a few of you, it'd been good so far to see people keeping their cool, all I can say, is that I have both nvidia cards and ati cards, more nvidia than ati actually, but i still strongly believe in ati. it just isnt any use ranting about these cards any more, instead of whining, how about the lot of you that are go out and search for info about these myriad new cards. if your too redundant to even doa search, than happily contemplate your thoughts before touching that keyboard. both manufacturers are doing an excellent job, I'd prefer to play the latest games with a slightly downgraded visual quality and better pereformance because of hax in the drivers than play some old atari game. It's acceptable at best, keep up the good behaviour guys :)Good luck to both parties on this. the introduction of pci-x will be a big turning point, if nvidia makes a superior card, but bungles the pci-x up, than ati may steal the lead yet again. or vice versa, although ati has been working successfully with pci-x for 2 years now....

Reply to below about 'lol'...He's a f**king kid. Dumb little shit try hard who should research his shit before talking down nvidea and ati. Yes wildcats are awesome cards, but their hardware is pure openGL, made for 3d apps like maya, 3ds max and softimage. Yes these cards have shitloads of ram, but it is setup completely differently to the nvidea and ati cards memory management. Lastly, these wildcat cards cost many thousands of dollars, if 'lol' could afford one, he would atleast be litterate. Ignore the dumbshit, wildcats couldn't play games if their silicon depended on it.

i didn't need to hear the news about 16 pipeline to know this info... i mean, if last years tech was 8 pipeline and before that it was 4,it is mostly comon to see a 16pipeline on both manufacturers... i think the news of this 16 pipeline din't scare off ati, just made the realize ndivia are not such imbecile people as to put a 8X2 pipeline technology on a new gen. card. anyways with current technology I say both will rival once more, because nvidia does not have any more tech that forms 64pipeline adn 1gb of video ramb. they are rivals in tech, exept ati did boost the old technology for what my guess is that they boos .013 micron a lot before release. i probably will end buying a 9800XT that probably will cut down prices almost half anyway...

Yes, Doom3 uses OpenGL.People, don't spread FUD for some rumours spread by the Inquirer. Let's wait till the are out and PRoPERLY tested by an unbiased tech site (that means, not Tom's, Anand's nor fansites.)

i support no card maker. all i do is wait till they have their full line of new cards out and buy the best overall performing card. This year i got a 9800xt. netx year it could be an nvidia as i had last year with my 4600ti. ill just have to see who has the advantage next year - but i will be more likely to go for a card offering better fps with fsaa on at a high resolution as i find games ugly with no fsaa. at the moment i am happy with ati but that dosent mean i wont change. i see no point in supporting 1 card maker over the other. if you think about it, who are you really supporting?? some rich old dudes and a bunch of shareholders. choose performance, not brand name!

haha what a bunch of envy atidiots. all they can do is whining about biased past issues which was created by ati. now that nv40 is coming they're affraid of looking like a bunch of losers they already are. nvidia rocks!

Sexmaster, u said " 9800xt was faster than gf5950, but not by much " I got news for u or any other nvidiot. Nvidia was so stressed out, it used 0.13micron process technology on its cards, just to catch up ATI's 0.15micron. That was big investment and meanwhile ATI was just playing with NVIDIA with optimizing its old cards even MORE! Even tho the technology was developed long time ago on both sides. What do we see on 5950, highest specs on market, 256MB of ram and loudest cooler.I use my raddy, im very happy, its stable, its fast, its good. I used Nvidia for past 4 years, loads of BS i got from em.. u say raddy drivers are shit, nvidia drivers witch optimizations to fool users. Now thease " nonofficial " news? Hey.. u guys belive in what u want, but just wait till ATI comes up with something, then brag all u want!

the gaming magazine Gamestar sayd that the NV40 will be at least 6 times faster in HL2 and $ times faster in Doom 3 as the FX5950 Ultra. It has got a new feature to render units in a RTS(realtimestrategy), too. If this is real the NV 40 rocks as hell :-)and SexxMaster makes good points about the driver situation. But nVidia has got the best Linux driver. That's important, too. But maybe not for everyone.

Hah, I can just imagine nVidia releasing this nice fast card...at the cost of covering 4 slots, and requiring it's own power supply.

to lol, do you ever make sense, your constant rambling makes absolutely no sense what so ever, now this is very interesting a 4 year old wildcat card that runs games better than a high end ati or geforce, not likely, chances are that the memory is sd (if you could even get a card that old to get that much without physically changing the chips) and the interface would be pci, and if it were agp(which it wouldnt) and ddr memory you would have spent well over 1 grand on the card, and since your grammer makes you sound like some massive WT 5 year old i doubt you could afford such a card, before making stupid remarks please do some research so that you dont look like a complete asanine indiot infront of the entire internet. and also about your 0 memory os, 1 question, if it doesnt use any memory then how does it load? can someone say complete RETARD ok now nubby dont ever talk again nubby

Master makes good points, however no real top title uses GL anymore its a value game option. Also with the 420 and the NV40 im sure the prices will get even more ridiculous...there is no way it even costs half to produce one of the cards, nonetheless no one is still quite aware of the R420's spec's and capabilities, personally i say until the're revealed ATI still is holding the lead.

hrmm this hunter character seems to know absolutely nothing about drivers and hardware releases and possibly older events on the ati side, think about atis drivers about a year ago, they sucked, now i admit that they are much better now, il even say that the 9800xt is faster than the 5950 ultra, but its not by much, and the price premium on both cards is just ludicrious. now with the new information of 16 pixel pipes, in theory this should improve performance by 50 percent with no core/mem clock changes along with agp bandwidth, but since the card will be a faster core speed and faster memory as well as twice the processor to card bandwidth (via PCI Express 16x) we can look at possibly 2 times the performance from the nv40 from the nv35, and like murmandarmus said, competition= lower prices. quite honestly dont get into flaming fanboy remarks forums are not for the insanley stupid or ignorent, but for information that might be usefull for someone, now for example hunter you might want to take my advice and stop being a fanboy and actually try a different card every once in a while, i just get whats the best for the price at the time when i upgrade, and ati's intellegence in open gl 2.0 is not very good, nvidia has always had an advantage in opengl, but always took a slight perf decrease in dx apps, where ati was the oppositethank you and good night

We all knew that a company of nvidias size wouldent idly wait for their market to slip to another company. They are probably giving their all to crush ATi so they wont go the way of 3d fx. They have fixed the major downfall of the previous fx, the exeedingly slow pixle shaders. I doubt that ATi will win this round but none of us want either company obliterated, competition = cheaper prices. SO DONT FLAME THROW!

Stupids dumb ass. ATI was, ATI is and ATI will be the best video procesor EVER!!! because have the intelligence of make good drivers with good result. Not to make a stupids driver with no suppor or make your monitor FLICKER, because ATI is the best. Crystal???? Fine.
