Now why does this news about NV40 mean it will be faster than R420? I mean, they both have 16 pipelines and nearly the same clock speeds. Actually what I hear is that NV40 has 8 true pipes and can simulate 16 pipes in some cases. I think it'll be a toss up. Besides you are all forgetting side by side image quality. Does an NV40 rendered image look better than R420 rendered? I doubt it. And I also doubt that they'll be able to produce these things well, its a whole cycle ahead of schedule. My money is on ati... not because i care one way or another about a corporation versus another, but I think the chip will be better. If I'm wrong I'll gladly get an nVidia chip (ones been powering my rig for some time now) assuming its not as ridiculously expensive as the stuff thats out now is. I mean really anywhere from 4 to 500 dollars is ludicrous.

ok, well the post apparently has a limit and cut off my post. Oops! So I will go on to performance; the performance should be close to equal. These firms are not stupid and I am sure they have planned their releases well. Anyone who has made a billion dollars can not be that stupid. You can call them dumb, but they don't care because they are laughing loudly all the way to the bank and can't hear you. Here is hoping that both the NVidia and the ATI parts are up to scratch so that no one is left out in the cold. I hope that the day will never come when you will have to buy different hardware to run software properly.

Well, as far as I can tell, this mess is all Microsoft's fault. Very interesting that Microsoft has now allied with ATI for their next xbox. Hmm ... seems almost as if they really couldn't care less if Nvidia goes down the toilet now. They have a new partner. Not to mention that Microsoft forces dx 9.0 as the standard API down developers's throats. I mean, if you want to code for windows, you have 2 options ... DirectX or Open GL. I bet Microsoft would just love to destroy Open GL and I am sure they are working on a nice and devious plan to do so as I type this post. Nvidia's fx architecture does not conform to the DirectX 9.0 API specifications as closely as the ATI parts. So in this industry, it appears that innovation is not the way to go. You should just let DirectX dictate the way that your card is made. I think this rationale is a bit ... incorrect. Since when does hardware have to be designed around software? Does this seem a bit odd to anyone else? I see a future where people will need two different cards to play two different games ... what a load of crap. I think that the gaming industry in general needs to get their stuff together and make sure that hardware is supported by software, not the other way around. I mean, just look at AMD 64, AMD notified Microshaft that they wanted to extend into 64bit computing ... so off went Microsoft to develop windows 64bit. How did it happen that the FX architecture strayed so far away from the DX API specifications? Seems very strange to me. If hardware requires that the DX API be modified (which it does but microsoft won't) for it, then DX 9 should be modified so that users of one card are not disadvantaged compared to the others. Both R3xx and fx5xxx have their strong suits but can one specific piece of software (DirectX 9.0 API) decide the fate of the PC gaming industry? I hope not. In addition. Secrecy is a good thing for the companies themselves but it is very bad for the consumer. Imagine y

More crap from Nvidia. More lies. The NV40 will not sport a true 16 pipeline card. Just 8x2. And only support P.S.3.0 which like the post below, only 1 or 2 games will support by X-MAS. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14878"Nvidia was telling people how 3DMark01 is a very nice benchmark since they can render 16 pixels per pass in it, using only eight pipelines. What Nvidia is using is the ability of the Vertex Shader model 3.0 (known as PS 3.0 or VS 3.0) where the Shader can actually render pixels as a virtual pipeline. But it can only render them without filtering information other than Point Sampling, a basic filter technique." WOW. What bullshit Nvidia.

"They don't get over it, ATI is not as popular as you want it to be"Actually it is. The R3xx chips have outsold Nvidia's FX chips almost 2-1 over the past 18-24 months. Just look at retail shelves right now. You see very few FX cards at Future Shop, CompuSmart, Best Buy. However, you see lot's of different types of ATI R3xx cards. The FX design(NV3xx) was a failure. The NV4xx chips look really promising. Let's hope it's not more of the Nvidia B.S. P.R. crap they have been spilling for the past 2 years almost...... And the only cards really selling for Nvidia right now are the MX models of the Geforce4 line. Why? I hgave no ****** idea. The 9200se or the 5600 are faster....

Hey folks. Just a brief comment: GDDR3 is not just a fancy name for DDR2. GDDR3 is actually a whole new memory type being developed by a team of companies, including ATi themselves. It is intended to address the concerns of memory being such a large bottleneck as GPUs get faster and more advanced (demonstrated by the highly understated, as of late, fact that placing twice the memory on a board nowadays has hardly any effect on performance. Ah-hah, see what happens when you use that squishy grey thing behind your forhead?)GDDR3 will feature some very important, and just as hushy optimizations that allow it to work better, in conjuction with a graphic chip, than traditional memory modules. In short, it is specialized memory designed and built for use in gaming cards (whoo-hoo!) Just another innovation by the current technological leaders! (Oops, I hope I didn't upset anyone just then!)

By killing the NV40 and going ahead with the NV45, this will cause Nvidia issues when it's time to refresh the NV45 6 months later. What are they going to do? The NV45 was to be the refresh. Now it's the debut chip. They have skipped a cycle just for the speed crown. If they even get it. These chips running on 0.13 micron cannot go above 600MHZ (if they can even get that high. A good read at Inquirer.net tells you why this won't happen on that die size) cannot run any faster. . Now ATI has almost 8-12 months for it's refresh of the R420 to beat it. Not a wise move for Nvidia. Short term gain for long term pain. Too much time for ATI to counter.

You guys are f**king stupid, ATI is one smart mother f**ker. They made Nvidia can their NV40 project, because their R420 would have killed it. Now Nvidia is hurrying to unleash a future project which they wanted to save for later. There is no way Nvidia will have the NV45 ready in time. The R420 will be out much before, and selling by the millions, while the NV45 is still getting it's silicon ready. ATI is so smart, because now Nvidia will most probably fall behind a full product cycle. ATI's R420 has 6 vertex sharder engines, they will certainly win the shader war. When the Nvidia finally releases their NV45 ATI will kill it off with their R423, or R480. Remeber in it's early stages the R420 was capable of 100 fps in colin mcrae rally 2004. Nvidia is one dumb f**k.

AFTER DAYS, nay weeks of inquiring we can now confirm that NV40 is not 8x2 marchitecture part as we previously suggested. Nvidia is behaving as if the NV40 was the Crown Jewels of Her Brittanic Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Fish can fly, but it's been spreading flying red herrings. Nvidia is telling "selected people" that NV40 is indeed 210 millions of transistor chip with 16 pipelines as we reported a few weeks ago.The other side of this NV40 coin is that the real Mc Coy the real NV40 card that was taped out quite some time ago is actually going to be KIA [Killed in action]. Very knowledgeable friends told us recently in the Vienna Opera house that NV40 with 16 pipes and 210 millions of transistor is completely other chip then original NV40. What actually happened is that Nvidia recently learned about R420 marchitecture and this entire 12x1 story and, that they will eventually end up in second place and decided to can NV40 project and to go immediately with NV45. Nvidia is a very egotistic company. NV45 is the name for PCI Express NV40 but apparently this new chip is a rushed new project that Nvidia wanted to save for later. Still as a consequence our Opera loving friend suggested that there is no possible way that Nvidia might have a working version of the chip at Cebit or if they have it its early silicon for showing off. You can forget about launch party at CeBIT or anytime soon, we are given to understand. Even if the company launches it in April it will be a pure paper launch as NVDA cannot deliver it so soon. It's not easy to make dramatic changes in silicon and as a consequence you have to re-tape it again and then hope that all will be fine in order to be ready to produce it in six weeks minimum. As the case is altered, Nvidia might win performance crown again but it's absolutely certain that ATI R420XT will be the first next generation card in shops. Nvidia and its partners desperately need this fuel possibly with Doom 3 as a ro

"ATi's upcoming R420 to sport 12 pipelines Marchitectural miracles By Fuad Abazovic: Δευτέρα 15 Μαρτίου 2004, 14:17 THE BIGGEST and most closely-guarded secret about ATI's upcoming R420 chip, in either R420XT or R420PRO guise, is the number of pipelines the chip will use. But now we can reveal that the R420 design features 12 working piplines from a possible maximum of 16." http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14739 Seems to me that Nvidia is trying to have a 16 pipeline card also. However with 200 million transistors, while ATI is doing this with just 165 million+ Another waste of silicon from Nvidia. Another 2 slot design. And another hot running chip from them also. So it seems that ATI is running a 12-16 pipeline card with a big vertex shader engine. Should be a close battle.

A couple of things to get straight.First: PCX or PCI-E. Not PCI-X, that is another thing altogether. Second: The NVIDIA bridge does NOT allow you to use the same card in either an AGP or PCI-E system. It allows NVIDIA to use the same chipset in cards made to work either in an AGP system or a PCI-E system. If you buy one of these cards you will not be able to transfer it to a new PCI-E motherboard when you buy it. The only advantage was that NVIDIA saved money by only making an AGP compatible chipset and then using the bridge to make it work in PCI-E slots. ATi has made two different chipsets, NVIDIA will eventually release a PCI-E compatible chipset. Third: NVIDIA's bridge means that the extra bandwidth of PCI-E never gets to the GPU at all. Once it hits the bridge, it is back to AGP speeds. If you have an AGP motherboard, there will be no difference. If you have a PCI-E motherboard, ATi will have more bandwidth. However, the extra bandwidth will only be used in video editing so far, with other uses being added later. I doubt it will be useful for games in this generation.

All rumor at this time. When the card comes out, then we will know. And as for PS3.0, ATI will support it. And guess you have not read into PS3.0 support. You need to do research on it newbie. PS3.0 offers zilch benefit for gaming on graphic cards. Zilch. The same way PS1.4 offered zilch to graphic performance. The 8500 ATI card offered PS.14 support and the Geforce3 series only supported PS1.1. No difference at all. PS3.0 offers no benefits in shader performance over PS2.0. Look it up before you post newbie.

"From our benchmarks, it is obvious that ATI Radeon cards are better suited for emulating the games that we tested under ePSXe and Pete's plugins with the settings we chose. The NVIDIA cards did hold their own and can take care of some tasks very well, so it isn't really fair to say that they aren't good enough to emulate a PlayStation game. We were a bit shocked to see the kind of performance drop from the 5950 Ultra the 5700 Ultra took in some of the tests; we will be looking into the issue further as our experience with emulator benchmarking progresses. There are some settings that can be tweaked in order to get more performance out of the emulator than we did, but we were going beyond simply high quality emulation of the actual PlayStation experience. Of course, if you want to play the Final Fantasy series in all its glory, ATI GPUs are the way to go"http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1986&p=13 Even running a emulator ATI cards are better. Most games crash using the 9800xt??? Wow, at every review of the 9800xt they have nothing but good things to say about the driver support and the performance of games on the 9800xt. This "poor" drivers from ATI is so old now it's a joke. If the drivers were so poor review sites would show this right away. Not the case. I am running the latest cat drivers, 4.3's and not one issue so far. And that goes for the last Cat drivers. It seems to me "the way it's meant to be played" game Unreal 2004 has had major driver issues on Nvidia cards and the latest Forceware drivers. Please stop spewing bullshit about Nvidia having "god-like" drivers when we all know that they do not. The whole 40, 50 series of det drivers were crap. It was not until the release of the Forceware drivers that Nvidia improved the drivers. Yet those same forceware drivers STILL run games in lower Floating point precision and STILL does not allow you to enable real Trilinear filtering in games. Especially in Unreal 2003, 2004. And it seems ATI is the only GPU company that releases driver updates every month. Nvidia does not do this. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14660

i think nvidias reasoning for using a brdige instead of native pcix config is to save costs - realistically its just there nv40 model that will have the bridge. by the time pcix becomes the norm for all computers, that will be when the nv45+ will be available with native pcix capabilitiesi think its a smart move by nvidia, saving costs yet still giving the alternative of a pcix card. ati is just as good as nvidia, but they arent thinking as logically i think - production yields and costs will be much higher than nvdas

hmmmm, interesting...the two most important things on a graphics card atm are pipelines and memory bandwidth. it looks like ati has the memory bandwidth and nvidia has the pipelines (although that unconfirmed since ATI hasn't mentioned thier pipelines yet.) two more facts for you's to take in to consideration too btw. GPU clock speed isn't entirely as relevant as it seems (we can take AMD vs Intel as the example for that fact) and the AGP8x bus still hasn't even come close to being expended yet. the only thing that dissapoints me at the moment is the fact that I will be upgrading to a PCI express mobo and it has been stated that they will not contain an AGP slot.

Just to makes things straight, does it really matter what the core of any card is, what the memory clock of any card is, how many "terrabites" a card has? Any of these cards will play your godamn games and I believe most of you here are over 15 (maybe some of you are still 5-6 mentally, but thats another story) so I think it's time to find yourselves a life and stop posting stupid comments on this forum. By the way, the ones that say this card will own that card and that card will be the king on top of shit hill, well you people are plain dumb, immature, name it. You have no way of knowing wich cards owns wich untill you see pure benchmarks. I'll be more than happy to come here in 3 months when the cards will be released and fully tested and see that most of you are 100%wrong.

Listen guys, as a digital logic board engineer, I can tell you that the NV40 will definitely not have 200 over million transistors. Think about it, it would need around 211 million transistor to have a full 16 pixel pipeline with one TMU per pass, plus a core clock over 500. I agree with the person below it would just be inefficient and run hot as the sun on a .13nm core. You really think that they would beat the competition by over 50 million transistors. ATI is definitely not stupid.

Read this review of the 9800xt vs. the 5950. The 9800XT is all over the 5950. And who says Nvidia has perfect drivers?? Just read the review and you will see Nvidia has plenty of issues with current games and it's current forceware drivers.http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTgwLDk= "In FarCry there is no room for doubt here, the ABIT 9800XT performs and looks far better. The ABIT 9800XT is clearly using Pixel Shader 2.0 by default and the GeForceFX 5950Ultra is clearly not. This difference alone makes the image quality different between both cards. Plain and simple the ABIT 9800XT is producing better image quality with higher performance in this demo." http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTgwLDE= Hopefully the NV40 will be better then the failure of chips in the NV3xx line....

Voodoo was made by 3dfx, 3dfx was sold out by nvidia, so he thinks that nvidia is king for crushing a small yet bloody goot company. it's petty, and stoopid, and nvidia should be slaughtered for it, not only do they kill 3dfx, but then they make the fx cards that were in honor of 3dfx (as nvidia chairman said) and THEIR SHIT! geez nfu ckfags get over yourself...

First, you kids who post links to The Inquirer, piss off, we prefer hard facts, not kiddy crap.Second, a possible reason why Ati released these specs is to allow the people at nvidia to believe they have got themselves a superior card, before Ati releases a card much more up to spec than the recent leaks show. They did it before with the e9700'a, their probably doing it again, and nvidia may just be fooled once more. now hush

My only comment is.. can ATi make a friggin driver package yet?? I have owned a few ATI 7500's and more recently an ATI 9700. The drivers were funky for the 7500 and a few years later STILL funky for the 9700. I had my 9700 for about 2 months, going through 2 driver revisions with it at the time and got very tired, quite quickly of the visual "junk" that would pop up in my games. So at this point i have sold my 9700 to a friend and he gets the occasional junk too but he is dealing with it. Me? I have gone to the nVidia camp and am quite happy with the support and driver quality.

The Catch 22 with this Card war, is noone is a winner, if Nvidias card ownz the Ati one.. then Ati will lose.. Nvidia will become a monopoly.. and the price for cards will go up, as there will be no competition for them.. its good that the 2 are at eachothers necks! i want both cards to be good :D

See if Nvidia has gone gddr3 @ 1.6ghz or stragerring 51.2GB/s, things start to look interesting on Nvidia's turf than ATI's gddr2 @ 1ghz or 32GB/s. ATI isn't showing any signs of major hardware improvement over the current generation. And isn't nvidia goin to have a faster clock as usual than ATI?

Sexxmaster is right we dont use the full bandwidth of the 8x AGP bus yet, so the extra bandwidth of the PCI-Express bus will be no help what so ever. It will however help with the overall speed of the computer system because of the way the PCI-Express bus does it's data transfers with the CPU & Memory. Thankyou

Dragon X

simply stop arguing about the AGP thing. the bridge provided by nvidia, Sorry nVIDIA has the ability to perform on both slots however being a bridge creates compatibility issues and runs at less power. research about it. second is to clarify the stupid comments of the AGP vs the nVIDIA PCI: both will have PCI, except ATI instead of creating a bridge model like nvidia, decided to make full pci card, making it less issues and full use of power. I dont think R420 will have 16 pipeline, at least it doesnt seems that way, but if they have atleast 12 things would be interesting. the extra million transitors will in fact give an advantage to nvidia over ATi but hell dont satr giving the crown just yet, since both havent come out and besides its seems nvidia went the extra mile to ensure winning hyping the chip with more transitors and 16 pipeline etc.... seems the story as nvidia being the P4 EE while ATi will be Athlon 64 and if this is so then Nvidia might win as well. unles they make stupid mistakes like bad IQ or sumthing. from now on i declare futile all coments on ATi being AGP and nVIDIA being PCI, mainly because the ATi that will have PCI is the competitor and you are comparing to the AGP version.
|
Anonymous
at 13:15 7/3/2004

The ATI will be using 12pipeline. The Nvidia will be faster because higher memory speeds, 16X PCI= double bandwidth, than 8XAGP, also Nvidia will be using 16 pipeline.

SexxMaster ICE

alright first off the guy below me is a complete and utter moron, secondly, who cares about a card that none of use will ever buy or even use in the near future, the nVIDIA card will have 16 pipelines, as where the radeon will have either 8 or 12 (dont know as this has not been released yet), and with the nVIDIA card using gddr3 256-bit memory and just naturally higher memory clock speeds and not to mention better fill rates and the such, theoretically the card will perform twice as good without the PCI-Xpress Bus width. I also saw that someone below me wrote that we dont even tap 8x AGP bandwidth yet, and we dont, so it does not make sense to go on to a new platform yet, with all of these thing present in the new NV40 then "theoretically" the NV40 will be about 3x faster than the NV35 (aka gffx5950 ultra) and the ATi card even if it uses a 12 pipeline architecture then it is still going to have a extremely smaller fill rate even if all of the other specs are the same, look at the 5700 ultra and the 5900se, the 5900 ran better because it had 8 pixel pipes vs 4 and also the memory bus was more too, (even though the 5900 was way under clocked as opposed to the 5700) (not a fanboy just stating the facts) PWN'D

1st off I think ATI made a smart move having two models of their cards, one being dedicated to 8x AGP the othe PCIx, it will surely reduce compatibility issue. At this time there are no real specs for the R420, nothing that really gives us an idea of it's power, except for the fact it will be using 256 bit GDDR3 memory modules. It's fact that Nvidia likes to blow a lot of smoke before their launch of a new generation product. NV40 to have over 210 million transistors, a clock over 500, and a (Full 16 pixel pipeline with one TMU per pass. This seems unbelieveable on a .13 nm, it will surely run as hot as the sun. Anyway all of these specs came for sources close to Nvidia and not from Nvidia themselves.

I believe what he means by bridge on the NV40 cards is the ability they may have to work in agp 8x and pci-e 16x. This allows nvidia to make one model for both pci-e and agp. which will reduce compatibility issues. (this may be incorrect, correct if you ACTUALLY know)And what is with some of you peeps saying R420 has 16 pipelines, can you provide a referance. And you should know that specs dont mean everything. Like an examply i gave in another post, a athalon 64 at 2.2 ghz will beat a p4 at 3.2 ghz in most gameing benchmarks

And how much did this wild cat vp 512 card cost. Last time i checked it was a little over $2000 Australian. If you feel the need to spend that much go right ahead. Reason bein that it has soo much memory at such slow speeds is because it's for workstations and openGL programs like 3d studio max ect. Because nvidia are useing the PCI express bridge it will mean you can plug the card into 8x agp as well as 16x pci. There is no evidence to show that this will hamper the performance of 16x pci. Unlike nVIDIA, ATi cards will be only able to run on either 16x or 8x (unless they change it to be like nVIDIA) which will create compatibity issues. At least nVIDIA is attempting to make the upgrade to 16x easier for those with pockets not so deep. Also the specs on ATi cards on the net have not said anything about it haveing 16 pipelines, sure it may adapt to have them later if they feel it is need to compete with NV40, but in the mean time R420 has 12

He's right....the bandwidth be as nothing compared to the extra power of the transistors...plus the nVIDIA cards have onboard mpeg encoding...far more helpful than ATI. Plus at my development house, we use multiple monitors, and this is FAR easier to setup and performance-kind with nVIDIA cards.

"nvidia is gay, get over it, when pci express will come out, ATI will have its version which is already under production and will also have 16x and 16 pipelines you stupid f**k" - you are an idiot. You just had to go further down the news headlines to see that the Nvidia cards: "will feature a full 16 pipelines" plus will have 210 million transistors to ATI's 180 million, 10 million more than what they thought Nvidia NV40 would have, therefore thinking they had the advantage. ATI HAS GOT IT WRONG. Therefore, Nvidia will win this generation of GPU's, as did ATI last time.

Correct you wont get full bandwith one direction. You will have to split it between the two. But you can also support AGP with the bridge since you have people that don't upgrade/buy new computers until the current one is 10 years old.

Anonymous
at 18:1 6/3/2004

The R423 will be ATI's PCI express card. And you won't see a motherboard support it until almost next year so PCI express when it's released is almost useless at this point. A bridge version is not exactly a good alternative.....

Why don't you show me some benchmarks that prove the R420 will outperform the NV40 and I might listen to your ATI rants.

Motherboards supporting PCI Express release in about 6 months. I'm glad you think PCI Express is going to matter right now when cards dont even tap the bandwith of AGP 8X.

Ah... finally the truth comes out; ATI WILL KICK NVIDIA'S SORRY ASS

"The PCI Express is 16X. ATI Still using 8X AGP...lol"A classic example of a true fag. Motherboards supporting PCI Express won't be available for at least a year after the cards are released and even then it will be rare.

The last 2 anonymous posters are right...ATi is 16 pipelines Nvidia are only 8, Nvidia will be using a PCI Express 'Bridge' which means a lower transfer speeds... and ATi's will be supporting it full... and to the guy who posted that the speeds are slow you need to get a life... the 9800pro speeds are slower than the 5900ultra... and it still kicks its ass TheRook

ATI is going to support full native PCI where Nvidia will use a bridge. Get your shit straight.

The PCI Express is 16X. ATI Still using 8X AGP...lol. Nvidia Cards will have double the bandwidth than the ATI's will have, Nvidia will win the war!

Yes if those specs are true it will blow the R420 out of the water, but you think that matters to the ATI fanboys here?

If those are the specs on the R420, the Nvidia is faster than this by FAR.

Aren't we cool? This is pretty awesome...except I doubt that I'll be able to afford these cards. That's alright though, because it'll push down the other cards prices. Also, hopefully this new line'll include some 'l33t' notebook video cards.
