The future will tell if ATI actually took the smarter route. No one knowns anything about ps 3.0 except what Nvidia and ATI tell us: one saying it means nothing, the other saying it means everything. Who can you trust? Microsft will not say anything either because they want both companies's business (assholes) Either way, we will see how usefull ps 3.0 is ... and if it is in fact usefull, then nvidia may come out as a card with more longevity than the ATI hardware. Or in a vice versa scenario, ps 3.0 might mean nothing after all and nvidia will be under the microscope. Also, the fact that the nv40 part has so many transistors. Do you really think those transistors are just hanging out on the card doing nothing? People keep saying that nvidia scrapped the old architecture. Hell no they didn't. The FX cards had some flaws but that doesn't mean that nothing from the architecture could be salvaged. The fact that the GPU has fp32. The fact that the GPU can process very long shader instructions (also true for the FX), they fixed the low temp. register problem from the FX series, the pipelines are still very versatile (ultrashadow II). The fact that the the architecture can function as a 32x0 where the FX could act as a 8x0 (in some circumstances). The FX suffered from a sever pipeline stall problem caused by bad scheduling. The architecture probably helped nvidia design the 6800. I doubt R&D ever "scraps" anything. I believe their research is cumulative.

Here is engineering for you guys. Nvidia scrapped everything and went back to the drawing boards for the NV40 totally new design. ATI on the other hand ATI felt that there is still much that can be done with the 3 year old R300 technology. ATI perfected the R300 and called it the R420. ATI has invested much less than Nvidia who spent in the hundreds of millions. Over 220 million transistor for what for second place. ATI still dominates with their 6X AA and 16X AF. Now they have added 3dc which will definitely become the standard compression because normal maps are here to stay. ATI choose the smarter route for 2004 by sticking with PS 2.0+.

It doesn't matter 'THE KOOL GUY'. ATI has not reached it max clock on the R420. ATI has stated that a core clock of 600mzh is possible. NV40 takes up too much power and has 220+ transistors so it can only be clocked 50mzh more bringing it to 450 mzh max. You think ATI is that stupid to max out their core already when the R480 is on the way. Nvidia is now desperate they have planned with Gainward a watercooled version of the NV40, but that won't make a difference because Asus has said that they will be able to take R420 clock speeds way beyond 600mzh, don't forget that samsung and ATI invented GDDR3.

[SA]V3rTO: ATi's drivers since the Catalyst drivers have very few problems. No more in fact than nVidia. If you check the release notes for nVidia's new drivers you'll notice they list several things that they fixed. They both have minor problems, but ATi hasn't had _bad_ drivers for quite some time. That's the old argument that doesn't really hold water anymore.

The Stubster also tells you about what we told you here last week about the new 6800 "GT" and faster 6800 Ultras. The Stubber also goes on to say the new X800XT Radeon cards will clean NVIDIA's clock when it comes to FarCry.

Ati seems to have went the smart route again. Not using useless features such as Mpeg4 encoding(why?? This is a gaimng chip?) and PS3.0 which won't fully see the light of day until 2005. Because of this, it allows them to clock the chip a bit higher without the extra power and heat caused by increased transistors. And it fits nicely in any PC CASE. ATI also seems to maximize the effiency of PS2.0 even more so the the 9800XT series.
This will be a close race again. But it looks like ATI by a nose. And if they improved their AA as they said they did, then Image quality again goes to ATI as the 9800XT has the same IQ as the 6800Ultra as tested on some websites. (Nvidia finally has went the rotated anti-alasing road. But not with Gamma correction? Why not? Should have done that)

It is certain that the R420 will have better image quality due to its new revolutionary Temporal AA, and 3dc. I would really like to try the NV40 because I have never experienced a Nvidia product before, but I have really been satisfied with ATI. What really pisses me off though is the fact that if I want a NV40 it will take up two slots, it cann't fit in a shuttle case, and I will have to buy a new power supply. The R420 will be clocked higher anyway. It is certain that the NV40 will win 3dmark but lose to most game benchmarks (inquirer.net) to R420.

Yea Nvidia has pretty good drivers. The Ati drivers are crap and never worked for me. It said my card could not be detected... heh now that sucks. I have had a Geforce 2 mx, Geforce 3, and a Geforce Fx 5950 and all the drivers they have can play every single game.

To the Xbox 2 compatibility guy. That's a load of crap and you know it. The smart game developers (Keyword "smart" therefore excluding bungee.... dumbasses) create their games so they're easily portable to many systems not just 1 console. They will have bugs on non-native systems simply because that's the way it is. If the developers aren't lazy they fix them and we don't end up with a crappy rehash like halo.

Note that the 15fps average is also due to the fact that most top range cards perform near equal at low resolutions simply because they are capable of running most things at the game's maximum frame rate in a low resolution. However, although much improved from the 5950, the image quality was still questionable, although in a fast fps i don't think i'd be too bothered. As for ATI's new card, unless it has a huge advantage over the NV40 i'm buying that simply because i've found nVidia's cards less buggy in the past and i cba with troublesoum cards.

I'm telling you ATI still have driver problems because when i had my Ge Force MX my PC never froze when playing Americas Army. Now i have a 9600XT and sometimes i get system lock ups, now it have to be the drivers. I know its not my system because this also happens to one of my clanmates. He also get system lock ups with his New Radeon 9600XT. Like i said the speed and everything is good, but i prefer to have a card thats a little slower than to have any driver or compatability issues at all.

It's going to go back to the way it was. Nvidia making the better cards. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Everyone knows it in the back of their minds. Even if the new radeon manages to match the new Geforce cards atm nvidia could probably just tweak theirs to go faster. I'd expect them too. They drew first blood, waited for ATI to strike back, then they'll probably pull out their shotgun and blow ATI in half. ATI spent time bumping up the old core and gave it a new name. Nvidia built a new one. They wouldn't leave all that extra power consumption for nothing. They suggest a 480w PSU because they expect a system that uses the Geforce6800 to use quite a bit of power.... my ass. It's like having 2 turbos hooked up to your car and only turning on one till the race starts. Nvidia isn't dumb, maybe the CEOs are, but they've already shown they learned from the last fiasco, what are the odds they haven't saved something just to screw ATI in the end?

Microsoft will learn the hard way, ATI is not that good, and when their Xbox 2 ahs an ATI chip in it soon after they begin to sell it they would realise. ATI still have compatability issues with new games today, i made a mistake buying my radeon 9600XT. Its fast and everything but my previous Ge Force 4 had no dirvers and compatability problems. I should have just bought one of the new Ge Force, it may have been a little slower but i get no probs and compatability issues with it. Thats the way it's ment to be played!

As for Nvidia having more room then ATI to clock their chip more seems wrong. Why? Because both the R420 and the NV40 are running on 0.13 die size(if ATI did not ramp up the R420 XT version on 0.11??) and the theoretical speed maximum is 600MHZ.
If any chip could clock higher it would be the R420. Reason being, the R420 does not have all those features such as Mpeg4 encoding and PS3.0 support that adds extra transistors and increases the chips heat. Also the NV40 requires 2 slots and a extra power cord to run it.
Only when the R420 is released will we know the dirt.

Well, i admint it does seem that ATI are scared this time, and they have every reason to be, nvidia has produced a very fast card.
BUT they still have shite pixel shader quality, yes it can do PS3.0, but it looks inferior to a 9800 XT. Just look at the shader comparison in tomshardwares review of the 2.0 vs 2.0. The nvidia shaders look blocky while the XT is crisp and smooth. Personally im gonna wait till the next gen of gfx cards, very little will use 3.0 for the time being and my XT runs everything fine at max settings anyway and will do till sometime into next year

Anyways, ATI bumping their clocks means they are worried AND that you can't overclock it as well anymore. BTW, im pretty sure that Gefore3 cards can do bumpmapping cause Halo 2 will use it, and Xbox = geforce3.

From what i have heard around the web, and in reviews, particularly in Toms Hardware, they said nVidia has now matched ATIs Image quality, except for Far Cry, and they were still comparing 6800U to the 9800XT, as i have said to many ppl, ATI have been in the Graphics Card business a whole lot longer than nVidia, ATI might not have had the SPEED to go with their cards, but they definitly have the QUALITY, hopefully this is the turnaround when they will have both SPEED AND QUALITY, and anyway, ATI used to be a Graphics only company, which dealth with industrial type graphics, graphic designing, CAD, all that sort of stuff that u see in other companies, and they moved all that experience into the Gamers market, of course their previous experience didnt require amazing speed, but it did require stable and reliable quality which they keep on building for us gamers, and now they might do the same with speed!

Ha. Have you seen the Far Cry shots on an old DirectX 8 card like the ti4600? It looks the same! (At least the water effects)PS2.0 is not even fully used yet. You know why? Because then the people with cards that don't use DX9 could not play the games and the companies that make them want a broad range of consumers. Cutting off half of their target audience would be a bad thing. Do you know how many people still have a GForce 3 or 4? A lot. Those are only DX8 cards. They can't even do bump mapping. They are the before pictures in all the Far Cry Pixel Shader comparisons you see. The funny thing is that the after picture that is supposed to be Pixel Shader v3.0 is identical to how Pixel Shader v2.0 looks. And the ATi cards can do that.

ATI has the best image quality period! They always have, Nvidia is the one cutting down their drivers for speed. The 9800XT has better IQ than the 6800. I don't think that the NV40 can go much higher in clock speeds. It already uses two power connectors, and it has 220 million transistors. It will get way to hot. The R420 will be on a .11nm process not a .13 what everyone thought. So it will only require one power connector, and it can fit in any case. ATI is also using Low-k silicon, so for sure they can clock their cards higher than Nvidia can. The R420 will be using PS 2.0b they call it, and has a new FSAA and AF that does not hit perfomance, also a 3dc compression technology. Every review website says that the 6800 has the same IQ as the 9800XT. The NV40 will win 3dmark but lose to most real game bench marks.Inquirer.net

The R420 is not out yet to compare IQ! And 128 bit color vs. 96bit has proved to be a non factor. Point: The NV30 supported 32 bit floating point precision(128bit color) And the 9700PRO series only 24 BIT precision(96bit colour) The R3xx chips had superior IQ. The differences in precision(96 and 128) you cannot tell. It comes down to implementation of Full Scene Anti-Alaising and Ansiotropic Filtering. And i am quite happy Nvidia has finally went with Rotated Grid AA as opposed to the arcaic order sampling technique. However, they did not include Gamma correction with their version of AA like the R3xx chips R420 series. That makes a big differnce. This is why IQ is the same or a little worse on the 6800 compared to the 98OOXT when running comparable AA formats. AA has from what reports indicate are greatly improved on the R420 architecture. And that AA includes Gamma Correction. So i suspect that IQ will once again go to ATI's court if this holds true. However, the differences will be minimal.
As for the NV40 ramping up speeds. The higher the speeds the hotter the chip runs. And with all those features on the NV40, this limits the potential of higher clock speeds. Minus using a dust-buster ;)
The theoritical speed rate maximum for 0.13 micron is 600MHZ. Neither ATI or Nvidia will hit that threshold. ATI might get higher because of yields and that they are using low kinetic gpu's. But don't expect much higher from Nvdia or ATI.
And it is ironic and almost hypocritical for Nvidia to now brace 3DMARKS. We all know the history of that, so no need to bring up that fiasco and mess again. Personally i want my performance and speed in games NOT 3DMARKS2003. That's useless because i can't play 3dmarks2003. It's not a game. And this is exactly what Nvidia said to the press when they were on the short end of

the 9800XT DOES! have better image quality.
That was one of the few down-points to the 6800, the facts that it's image quality still sucks ass.

A-Boy i totally agree... i have a radeon 9600 XT and it kicks ass in every level compared to its price (180 euro when i bought it a few months ago)... i had to pull out at least 100 euro's extra to get the same performance at Nvidia cards... which i DIDNT!!!

So Nvidia fans please be quiet about image quality, the 9800XT is already better than the new Nvidia 6800 in Far Cry. And before you start raving about PS3, realise that by the time PS3 is fully utilised in games the next ATI card will be out fully supporting it. It seems to me that Nvidia are doing the same thing as they did with the FX series, provide the 'better' features without having a fast enough card to utilize any of them...

anonymous below me, ATI's card MIGHT be faster than the 6800 but it is a fact that the picture quality will suck hard compared to the 6800. If the picture quality of the 6800 was decresed to the quality of ATI's card then it would definately kick it's ass in performance. Plus it sounds like ATI's card is just gonna be overclocked too high.

if this is true that ATI isn't significantly faster than nvidia, nvidia has a definite winning card unless ATI can sell their cards for much less. if both boards are the same speed, i'd pick the one with ps 3.0 support given that the price matches ATI's.i thought ATI said their x800pro was faster than the top nvidia card. i sure hope thats accurate and that the this article is just based on guesses by the author. if the x800pro is indeed faster, it means more for our money. we will all know the answers soon,...but i want to know now! *drools*
