This kind of Technology, i do believe Ionic Breeze uses the same thing lol, moves air with no fans :-)

This is old news. Researchers from Purdue developed the technology a few years ago. They were working under a grant from Intel and did produce a prototype. I take it they sold the technology and probably gained made quite a bit.

Modulate the airflow and you've got a plasma loudspeaker

cant they just use the same stuff the shuttles heat shield is made of :-)

Also, doesn't this ion-crap technology produce ozone (which is toxic to humans)? Yeah, let's poison the air in our homes.

@ soulraver: Even if this is yesterdays news, It doesnt matter, As long as it's not last years.

anon@18:54 note how I said, "how much more effective will a larger fan be?" esspetily when all they say is it will cool it, they don't say how much it will cool. theres no Delta T for all we know it could cool it 5 degrees below ambient or something stupid like that. and as wattage goes up heat goes up exponentially. a 25w chip probably doesnt even need any cooling

Soulraver has a point though. I remember reading about ion wind devices with the intent to cool electronics almost two years ago in a science magazine. There were serious concerns about the long term impact on the rest of the equipment though.

Anon@16:10 Read the damn article and quote properly. It states that device based on this tech that's a mere 1cm^3 is able to cool a 25w chip. That's pretty fricking awesome!

"the technology has the power to cool a 25-watt chip" so wait it can cool the small chips that don't need cooling? no chip that needs cooling is 25 watts or less. and how much more effective would a larger "solid state fan" be?

Every time some 'researcher' claims to be outperforming something that already exists, they lie.
