hi i am a fan of this i never was a fan enery was by neardrs
Nick Savage at 19:1 13/9/2005
this i gotta admit feels about rite, i am a f**k of alot less social. besides that, i have a beautiful fiancee, i weight lift and am at 245lb, i have like no friends anymore though
acctually beta waves from the brain are a negative thing. they contain bad emotions and alpha waves is what you get when you are meditating...thus gamers would probablly be more relaxed if thier alpha levels were higher than beta.
e-bomber at 15:2 24/11/2002
this study is probably true but... wtf who cares. i think all u ppl who bug out about it being wrong r the ones with the real problem. all of u saying "f**k the f**king study i don't have any f**king anger problems what the f**k." why do u care what a study says. if u don't think it applies to u than don't wory about it. u don't have to bitch and complain about what some japanese guy said about games that will not have any relevence in your life ever. so just relax and shut the f**k up.
btw pre-frontal lobes are assosiated with pain and pleasure.. if you watch tv the same effect acures to those being monitored. When I was younger I got into video games cause I didn't have friends not because I wanted to avoid any, now I have plenty of friends.. bad article.
i think the Genious japanese researcher should try to find out reasons for kids playing games. some ppl play it for past time like my bros once a year. they only play like teh most popular ones. thats fine. some ppl are totally f**kin addicted like me.
i kind of agree with this article. all the symptons this article says i have faced. i have less concentration, friends and no creativity i am sure. But i wasn't that way all the time. i don't think when i was born i was destined to be a zombie with rarely expressing my emotions in the world. i have two other brothers and they were just like me all full of energy when we were kids. Now we have all grown and they have a really good social life and r popular men now. We ll used to to hangout together and were really freindly in our childhood. what thing in my life got me screwed was my mother who didnt let me go out with my friends, while my older brothers did. i just cant understand why she did that but she never really wanted me to have friends. Maybe she was scared of all the kids leaving the house and she being all alone one day. she let me do everything in the house and bought me anything i wanted but screwed my life when it comes to freinds. So i do play games and there is nuthin wrong with that cause its not game that is bnad its her who f**ked me up. the games are like an addiction i have with smoking takin drugs and games nice. My point is i would burn all my games if my social life changes somehow and go out more. Cause nothing in the life controls me and i can quit anytime.
this is total BS, I am so much more creative because of People's ideas. Take Blizzard's Starcraft, all the custom maps ppl make gives me great ideas for my own. Diablo 2, Everyone had their own, unique character, at least till the xpansion) and then, games like D&D (paper & pencil, non-pc) let you pretty much play as the character you CRATED, how creative can u be thinking as a diff person!? Peace btw, nice saying godfather "You laugh because I am different. I laugh because you are all the same."

It just goes to show you: If something is fun it's unhealthy. Damn I knew this Computer games thing was to good to be true. I've been playing since I was 8 or so (I'm 27 years old) and I do sometimes have difficulties to concentrate. I also have a very small circle of friends. I don't have the anger problem people mentioned and I alternate my gaming with sports, movies and stuff but I must admit that games are central in my life. I've never had a girlfriend and I am real bad at understanding girls. I'll end this on a positive (sort of) note. I still love games =) ....=(
Hello there who said so gaming is noncreative i became lot creative in thinking only after playing games like quake now i can think nice enchanced star war kinda worlds more easily. As for friends most of my friends studious or not are gaming freaks concentratng - well my be i be lacking in concentrating biology but i am good in physics for i can relate most of it into game engine
ok ok, WTF do ppl think life is, how maby f**kING friends can someone have, about almost EVERYONE I KNOW, has their little circle of friends, THAT'S HOW LIFE IS, AND THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE.... antisocial ..bahhhh
1. ANGER: ok i do get angry quick but i got that form my dad and i'm working on it and believe it or not it's pretty easy to control. 2. CONCENTRAION: i have NO problem what so ever 3. CREATIVITY: rofl, i am the MOST creative person there is, wait for my work soon 4. EMOTION: you got me there, the other day i f**ked up my friend's leg and felt NOTHING, the next day SAME thing happened to another friend of my (his NAIL this time) and AGAIN i felt NOTHING, like i wasn't responsible AT ALL, that's the only thing. but i DO feel love, and sex.. oh dont' get me statred woohoo, so i'd say i'm ok (FOR NOW) and
and WHY TEH f**k DOES EVERYONE THINK BEING LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IS A GOOD THING, I'M HAPPY CUZ I'M DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE ELSE AND THAT I UNDERSTAND MORE, most ppl are idiots , idiots i tell u "you laugh at me cuz i'm different, i laugh at you cuz ur all the same" thank you, thank you.

ok folks, this is a JAPANESE study.
have any of you seen the sick twisted perverted video games they play in japan?
omg no wonder.
P2_Phantom at 10:50 22/6/2002
by the way im not angry, by now im Laughting
P2_Phantom at 10:49 22/6/2002
all those studies are f**ken wrong I know so much people that play games and they are way not what they say that they should be I mean the oposite! they only want to destroy the gaming industry and wtf megagames if you keep putting that kind of news then this site is going to break and you wont be able to give ur kids some food to eat !
P2_Phantom at 10:40 22/6/2002
hmm oh well, i spent 8 to 12 hours playing in front of my PC! and wtf i got lots of friends and its not hard for me to get more and im of that kind that is always happy (depends on the person of course) and the only one i can say is true is that one concentrating f**k! i cant concentrate !
Jenkins at 17:22 20/6/2002
I think that the study may be at least slightly correct. People that play games 7 hours a day would be less creative because they have the games to do that for them. I think that a reason that the beta waves was so low in the folks that played video games is because there was no need for them to think of new ways to entertain themselves. They have video games. I doubt that people who play video games are less creative even when they aren't playing games. I know many people that play video games and also do things that require a lot of creativity. I play video games, but I also play guitar, design web sites, and make independent films. So the study can't be totally correct.
I would just like to see them do this same test when people are at work. I wouldnt be surprised if the results were alot lower.
And personally I think its all bull**** anyway. I have been playing games for many years and my creativity, emotions and concentration have not suffered one bit. In fact I would say they have grown 20 fold since I was 6 years old.
This is the first article I have read on your site. I found the layout easy to understand, and the content of this particular article very interesting! I intend to read more articles when I have the time. Top stuff!
Boadicea at 18:12 13/6/2002
I've been playing games from an age of seven, if this junk were true, I should be a vegetable by now!!i agree with the fellow below here! i think it stimulates rather than destroys!!
It's apperant there were only used old fashioned action games in these tests as most sports games, especially car games do not require any skills other than practice, however I do believe puzzle games that require lots of thinking can't possibly damage the brain no more than spending much time calculating just for fun. It only keeps your mind in more practice so your next project in real-life should be easier. Ofcourse you can over use everything. it's a bullshit that people that play video games are not creative, I´m very creative and playing some games makes me even more creative.
Well i'm a hardcore gamer and i have none of these symptoms and i'm intelligiant, does it apply to everyone? I'm quite social, isn't speaking to people online a form of socialality anyway?
I just thought about it (again) and I don't think it could be too much of a problem especially with the whole not thinking thing. It might just be true to a certain extent but many games require a hell a lot of thought eg. Final Fantasy series (well some of them at least) you can't play and beat FFIX without thinking about the game. I've been playing games since I got my first NES and played Mario (bloody plumber) and I haven't had too many problems by playing games. I might have a slight temper problem and about a total of what... 10 close friends and the rest just don't think I'm weird (kinda like toreth) but that's it. I might not do too much outside and such but that's because I like in northern B.C. with about ten houses around here (most of which is filled with old people) And a lot of times I just prefer to listen to my muzzak and spam various message board places. I think if you don't make it a problem it's not a problem and if you get all paranoid and shit then you're F*cked for sure
Yeh, I do play way too many vidio games ad i'm not the most popular person in the world. If I could turn the clock back I would have played less games. But I still go out and have fun all the time Well anyway I'm very creative and artist, doin well in my art classes and i want to take it furthur. ah well
Sorry, final post (I should really think about reading everything twice before posting - lack of concentration?)
Anyway
this is one line that jumped out at me.
"Mori said the research showed that only the nerve circuits of sight and motion moved when people played videogames, causing a drop in the process of thought"
What this states is that games stimulate only reflex and sight to be active during a video game - I can relate this to FPS's like quake 3 etc because the fastest reflexes win in most cases.
What about the adventure games? (Broken Sword series, Gabriel Knight etc) These games rely on the user to use their brain and creativity to finsh puzzles - my second brother sat thinking over one puzzle in broken sword for a week before cracking it (and most of that time was off the computer), and in most cases the puzzles are very varied.
If sitting in front of a computer creates a loss of socializing due to brain wave suppression due to not requiring thought beyond picking up the next biggest gun and shooting someone, how do these games fit in - more often than not you will never be required to use only sigt and reflex for these games as they do not require precision movement as much as solving complex puzzles through a set of actions that must be thoroughly thought about before implementing it - and trying again in different combinations until you solve the puzzle.
So in essence - what are the games they were testing for the results? and would it make a difference if the game were changed to a more thought provoking challenge rather than a shoot-em-up? Also, anti-social tendencies I am sure come about by not participating in events other than the computer to a much higher degree than degeneration brain wave activity although I would agree that it is a problem that could be adding to the already prevalent anti-social tendencies.
Most of the posts I read say people believe they are alright. Why not get other people you know tell you about yourself?
Bear with me if this sounds strange but all of us - me included - have lived with this "condition" all our lives and so when we look at things our view will be distorted by our own experiences. As such we will -more often than not - look alright in our own opinion. Since social norms differ from country to country there is no real set social norm.
As such try to recognize what is the norm where you live and then ask people who know you if you live up to that norm or not.
Also, if anyone is wondering, I live in South Africa and am not a professor or anything - just thought it sounded strange that people were saying that by their "own standard" they were allright (this as usual includes myself so I am not trying to upset anyone)
I am a gamer and I have been told that I am not exceptional at socializing. I can accept this, but I am also an ADD.
BTW, Does anyone have the E-mail address for the group doing the research as I want to see if the process is permanent or can be reversed. An interesting fact - my brother exhibits all the tendencies that this goup described (anger etc) but I play games more often.
(I think there is also more to the social behviour and actions of the person prior to "degeneration" that influences how the person reacts to those around them - point in case, I don't get angry but do not socialze well whereas my brother becomes the second mount vesuvius at the slightest provocation but socialzes very well)
The interesting point is I am a triplet and all of us have ADD, so we are an ideal testing platform.
And I along with many other people fully share your views. OOP G2G D-Ice wants to talk to me again (bless that black jailed gang leader)

Stupid bull-shit, i live in argentina and i m 16 yeah i play games, but doesnt mean i am a social retard. i have many friends from different schools, i go to parties disco clubs everything. i playy my ps2 and pc about 2 hrs per day, not always the same. spite that i consider myself a creaative person, i like drawing a lot i find some books intresting (mytology mostly). plus these reserchers only analysed japanese people who spend 3 whole days out of seven playing, the otheer 4 are divided into 1 day of sleep 2 3/4 tv and de other quater studing. but of course this damages your brain!! damn japanese they mix everyone in a same bag.
PAY NO ATTENTION TO THIS ARTICLE UNLESS YOU REALLY HAVE NO FRIENDS!!, DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY AND TO HELL WITH THIS SHALLOW INTERVIEW THERE ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO RESEARCH, KIDS SHOOTING AT SCHOOLS ANYONE??

What The F**K is the mening in that article... It is Wrong i play over 8 hour every Day and im still active... i go out on walks, meets friends and working out in the Gym... Its all Wrong.... But the gaming takes some time if you Need to Studey... ..............THE BEST THING IS.....
Yo Toreth I think I am a better person because of gaming. Sure spending $10,000 a year on computer upgrades might seem crazy but shit, Imagine how well GTA3 runs @ 1600x1200 in 32bit color and getting over 13,000 3D marks. Might seem like overkill but it's good to know it's there (Next up the new Radeon and a T-1 (yeah, right). Seems kinda like that Maibatsu monstrocity commercial don't it? Well back to GTA3 and my 93% completion status (stupid packages).

also i'd like to add that the social thing is also wrong, this article is way to general. what about games like madden or tekken, that could be part of a great social event. mulitplayer games are very popular and seem to be pretty social
Anonymous at 13:51 11/6/2002
uh, yeah, games are just a simulation of different situation in real life. i bet that games use the mind just as much as watching a movie, and no one's said anything bad about that. what about sitting on the subway doing nothing i'm sure that's not working your brain. this article is stupid, of course its only goign to work certain parts of your brain, that's like saying that jogging is bad for your neck cause you're not working it. and it doesn't even say what kind of games. you're tellin gme that there are no games out there that promote creativity? a bunch of morons what were they monitoring? people playing pong?

Another 20 cents worth.
Who thinks that because of gaming they are a better person, come on, someone, anyone *gives up, leaves and then spends 10 minutes trying to decide wether to play Warcraft 3 or Neverwinter nights.*
Man, reading this made me realize how many more people like me there is. I will NOT stop gaming until I'm dead or a brainless automaton. Hell... It's all good!

I've been an avid gamer since I was 4 (When my parent's bought me and my siblings an NES). I play too many video games, I'll admit it. I have an anger management problem, I'm extremely anti-social, I can't concentrate, and I'm paranoid. Is there any way to recover from these side-effects of playing too many video games?
Ok I admit it man I get pissed off real easy and am somewhat anti-social but I mean for me it's not really a problem and I could stop gaming anytime (denial) but I mean there is worse kind of people than gamers so it's not all bad.
I'd rather be an avid gamer then some pill pusher in the ghetto of Liberty City... Uhh i mean New York

Torteth at 18:5 10/6/2002
Well, I'm still somewhat undecided about all this. I started gamin' when I was about 9ish. Now I'm 16 and I have 3 people I can call REAL, CLOSE, friends, and about another 20 who are just pretty cool and dont think I'm weird. I dont care what others think about me or what I do at all. It doesnt bother me if people dont like what I look like or what I say etc. My friends mainly respect me cos I know my way around a keyboard (hey, I worked some magic at our school and now we play Quake 3 at lunch time.) but everyone outside my group of friends at school and my group of friends at LANs (comments welcome) think I'm weird and not normal at all. Sure I rage sometimes, and I've only ever taken it out one someone once (looots of pressure that week.) Anyway, now go back and look at this, what has it told us, that we arnt as sociable (spelling) as people who stay outside with others. Well DUH, if you didnt know that, now you do, but I'm sure everyone knew this! Oh, and I say this team comes here and does a study of people at our local skate park. Our town is in the process of being taken over by skateboard wielding Skegs. Seriously, the other day I saw a 7 year old boy with a skateboard, the pants, the shoes, the attitude. it was sick. Now this seven year old hangs around all these older skegs, who contain more drug users, more crims, more vandals etc, and what will he become....? anyway, this is all my 20 cents- *notes post length...* - errr, make it 50 cents worth.

hmm... when i read this story, I have to think, is a study into the effects of gaming on JAPANESE people relevent to a gamer in NORTH AMERICA?? Really now, this study is nothing to worry about for us over in the U.S. and Canada (unless you're a japanese-american or japanese-canadian)
Considering the small size of the sample (240 people) this hardly counts as conclusive proof. For years women in North America were diagnosed for heart disease based on a study whose subjects included only men. Lets just say that heart care for women drastically increase in effectiveness once a proper study was done.
I think megagames should really refrain from posting articles such as this one, they only serve to stur up trouble and spread half-truths based on questionable research.
Mmmm... this is quite important, i mean this is true in most of the ways i think. Im 17 yrs old and i cant even count the number of friends i have, ive been traveling all over canada in different schools, my parents are divorced and they had many partners, i had a hard time when i was young and that shit stuff of life... but the point is, i like being on a computer because im doing cinematic animation and most of the time im on counter-strike or other games like that but its not affecting anything of my personnality. I think im over all that brain washing thing, i think im just doing my life as good as possible for myself and some time i get angry , it true but dont put it on the fault of videogames its stupid evryone gets angry in our world and if people are becoming more and more addicted well its theyre problem cause i have outnumberous friends all over the place, i always make new friends, they like me , i like beeing with them and talk to them ..... and im still an '' efficient '' member of the society.... maybe theyre right but for myself, its not true at all cause im filling my day with many other activitys like reading news , calling my friends and go play sport then go party somewhere and get drunk .... yeah maybe its not the best life but i like it and the few hours that i want to relax , well i spend it on videogames soo what ... whats theyre problem why dont they go make research on AIDS instead damn it.
Id haft to agree with the end results of this study. Ive been playing video games since....well i cant even remember im 18 now and ive probably been playing since i was old enough to understand what they were. I find that I am prone to fits of anger even rage, ive never taken them out on people but I have come close. I also find the out side my group of friends i have a hard time making new friends if there not some what like me then I cant relate to them at all and i usually seem weird to them. I have also discoverd that with in my group all my friends that play video games are also subject to extream fits of depression and that alchohol abuse and the use of drugs is at an all time high for us. If you have expreienced anything simmilar I would enjoy reading your response.
Jeez, I don't like the sounds of that, I've been playing computer and arcade games for over 17 years now and although I don't think that Its done me any real harm, I have to admit that I do sometimes feel a bit anti social. I get on ok with my own small circle of friends, but outside that it does sometimes feel a bit awkward to deal with socialising.
What I will point out here is that I have started to see loads of kids totally addicted to games from a very early age, 5+. (I didn't start till I was 10) Which I really don't think is a good idea, It irritates me to see kids of that age doing nothing but sitting glued to tv shows which pour out more life experience than any kid that age needs, or sitting playing games all day and getting all whiny if they don't get to keep playing. That age, as the good prof points out is when a person is still developing and if what he claims is true, which I believe is the case, then they will never entirely develop properly. At that age, kids should be outside running around, discovering the world, looking under rocks, climbing trees, stuff like that. When they get a bit older, THEN they can start plugging themselves into consoles for hours on end, like me! ;)
Hmm, this kind of bothers me. I play games a lot but have never got angry as to what I thought beyond normal expressions for anger. The truth is I don't believe in violence and usually I get sad before I get angry if something violent happens to me like a fight or something. I don't seem to have much trouble getting firends though I haven't ever been on a date, but I'm sure that's my fault because I don't bother to try. I'd like to hear what anyone has to say upon this. And oh yeah, if anyone can help me by telling me a program I can use to patch FF7 for pc to work properly on Windows XP and Geforce3 video card, I'd really appreciate it. Since Eidos does not seem to be updating the game anymore. And one last thing, I did get real mad once when my supposed friend punched me a couple times because I did not go do what he wanted and I punched the stairs in his house real hard, but I think that's normal when people are at a high state of tension for something like that.I don't usually epress myself though which may be from playing video games a lot. But whatever they are fun :)

Yup yup, anonymous is right. I am losing my personality. Soon enough I will be nothing more than a robot, obeying your commands. Hmm. Not a bad idea I suppose. Of course, maybe this was the videogame industrie's main intention in the first place. Soon enough, we will all be slaves on another planet. Oh wait, gotta go. Grand Theft Auto III is calling me.

Dumbass can't spell... Just because YOU DON'T want to believe in this you think its wrong. Didn't it say prolong hours of games can get make someone to get angry fast? Well puNDuKE is your proof.
