I've just read this entire topic and I just want to put my 2 cents in.

BTW I don't think piracy is wrong and I bet coders in a large company don't they don't feel the small loss in profit, the publisher does, the developer does. I'm not sure how Valve pays their coders, artists etc. but I assume they get a salary not a cut of the profits (I don't know so don't flame me if I'm wrong)

Erm... The beta is no where near finished. It's extremely buggy and there is 30 mins tops gameplay in it. It's nowhere near 100% and if you think it is then you weren't expecting much gameplay. Zlaya if you knew much about developing computer games which I suspect you have a lot to learn you would know that there is way too much to do before the game is ready for release.

Do yourself a favor and go look on edonkey for the half life 2 torrent file. I'm pretty new to torrent but its mainly a give and let give type of service. If you download the loader file then you should be able to get it with no problems. Just go over to bittorretnts website and download there install first. After thant any .torrent file you try and open will start a multi session download for you. I'm pretty drunk right now, but it should be easier said than done. Or done than said..... either way you can get it. What does it even matter what people think about a program that hasnt even been released yet. I fell sorry for valve and all the work then have put into this game. If they where smart they would just releas it and get it over with. Doom III alpha came out and all it did was show the world that the engine was gona be impossible to run for the every day type of video card. People ran out and purchaed new cards stirctly based on the fact that the doom III alpha didnt run up to par. If we will all just sit back for a little while and realize that the companies just want us to do what they tell us to, we would all come up with the conclusion that we have to stop buying games all just download them all off of mirc or a source of warez. Thats my three cents and im out.

why would valve release thier own source code which other companies could take and use to make thier own game, shortchanging valve? know you said it was just a theory, but it isn't the public they really care about, i highly doubt they care WE play some crusty old beta... its aspiring or struggling companies that need a break that this is all about, if it was just the beta it would be good press, but to quell all suspicions, the valve source code has been laid out on the table for anyone to get at, thats what this thing is all about, at least thats my opinion... i could be wrong

when i dled the hl2 beta i was alittle suspicious about how good the game really was,i'm one of those rare doom 3 fans. After playing for 5 minutes i was convinced that HL2 will be a great game and that i am going to buy it for $50 when its released. people who say Valve deserves their hard work to get stolen because they delayed the game are really ignorant and most likely do not know anything about how serious this is to valve as a company. I think it's sad that people can't wait for the game to be released "in full," before judging the actual quality of the game. Look at all the other Beta releases from other game producers...think about how their beta version of their games weren't all that great, but the results were awesome. An example of this would be Diablo II. I don't agree with what this leaker, or whatever you want to call him, did but perhaps Valve will produce a much better game than before all of this happened. Just my 2 cents.

valve is NOT going to be ruined by 15 unfinished levels being released. the sniper rifle isn't in thier yet, they ak doesnt work at all (if your even bored enough to find out how to get it, the mp5 doesn't work, thier are plenty of weapons alone that don't exist in the game even. No one needs to worry about this ruining valve, out of the 35 hours it is estimated to beat the game, it'll take you 30 minutes tops to play through the beta (thats including level loading times and crashes)And to Mr. Beta_Champion, for the record the only unscripted sequence they talked about was the movement in AI in that 1 scene where they were fighting on the street. Phystown is scripted movement by movement like many other levels, they never said none of the levels had no scripts, they just said the AI chose when to move forward or if it was suicide to try and get to the next car in the road for cover. Thier needs to be a script or waypoint to guide all your teammates to where they need to go, just how they get thier wasn't scripted. If their wasn't wasn't they would all just sit wherever they were spawned! i can't defend phystown though, that really was a dissapointment, in the beta the propeller blade won't even spin when you flip its little switch. you gotta shoot it with the grav gun, and the barrel thats supposed to explode and send a flaming car into the zombies didn't go boom at all, it just went tang and fell over as my plan failed and was swarmed by zombies and beaten brutally till i had 8 hp left and dropped 3 grens at my feet to take all the bastards with me! sorry got carried away thier....

What was the winzip pword for that bittorrent link posted earlier?I simultaneously pulled it from bittorrent and overnet and received both at about the same time (almost 2 full days, but I started overnet a half day later). Both are the exact same size, and look 100% legit. Only one of the two files are pword protected though (the bittorrent), just curious what the password is (not that I need it, but I know a lot of other people who pulled it off of bittorrent instead of overnet). Or I guess I'll just have to take 10 mins to find a winzip pword cracker and use that..

By the way I also forgot to mention that I don't think the specs will be too big a deal anyway. My PC played most of the thing 60fps+ and that was the beta. When they have fine tuned it the game should play on quite a few slower systems too. I played it with 1024x768x32 on a Athlon XP 1700+, 512MB PC2100 DDR, 256MB GeForce FX5900 Ultra on 4x AGP.

I downloaded the beta off bittorrent. There is no virus or trojan on it. It is actually about 3.94GB unzipped and a lot of the levels play. It's a very interesting to play through a bit of it and see what it's like. Although I think those of you who were expecting to be able to play the whole game through and for it to be almost as good as the original is going to be had pretty stupid expectations. The beta is good it confuses me how valve even thought they were going to have it released by the date they gave. It was no where near ready. I think the new date is realistic and the hacker thing is really just an excuse but who cares as long as we get HL2 right?

Hey Cybrosis7....that would be the minimum specs stated for the game ...but actually playing the game on a pc with those specs would be a different story...as if u could!! It would be so staggered/laggy...HL2 will be 3D intense...i tried watching the HL2 vids on a 800MHz, FX5200 = and the vids where not the smoothest...they were watchable...but not as smooth as they should've been. Like trying to play UT2003 (min specs p3 733MHz DX6 G-Card) on a system like that....HOPELESS...lucky if it could support the default bot numbers...let alone trying to increase the number of bots!

who in the right mind would want to download an unofficial version of HL off anywhere?? For all we know that stolen code would have a trojan installed in it as well?? Whats gonna stop the thief from modifying it and put a virus or trojan in there so he can screw you too? I don't know if it's just me, but I feel better knowing I'd paid for something that's clean and official. This fiasco has done nothing but pissed off many fans and gamers out there. For al of you that still go on about this killing Valve, i have played the beta, it is fun for about an hours, but i thinks its pre-E3, it has all the e3 levels, but they don't work right. they are all buggy beyond belief, they have about 20 some levels 10 of wcihch are fully textured, and 8 with working AIthier is no story whatsoever, they don't even have the voice recordings in thier just text across the screen! thier is no way that this done any more than just tease people! Screw the hacker that released it, but enjoy the beta, your not hurting anyone but yourself, cause it'll just make you want the game more, cause if you play EVERY level on the beta, it'll only take you like 30 minutes (including loading time), and the games is supposed to be 30-40 hours, nowhere near enough of it was released to do any harm. in the long run it'll just make more people want to buy the game just because they all got teased by the 8 still unfinished lvls that were barely playable but at least had AI.

Ok I have the leak already. It is not the full game. All it is is everything you have seen played already via e3-demo's. Only small bits and peices are from the actual game. I have a 2400+ ,1gig of pc 3200 ram ,ti4400 oc'd slightly. And the Game runs fine. I get teh about 30-70 fps at 1024x768 and avereage 60FPS all around at 800x600. This means that once the game is finished and optimized it will run fine on a sys at least as good as mine. I got it off of overnet. Just search for half life 2. Expect a two day download no matter how fast ur connection is. oh yeah afeter you get the full download you will have to also download 062.rar with it. But the game looks f**kin amazing and the dx8 effects are not even matched by any game yet. I have doom 3 also and hl-2 beats doom 3. But only in part. Doom3 has better charachter textures and bump maps but HL2 has better dx8 and 9 effects!

My comment on this is, I think Valve wanted this to happend so they could put up the release of HL2 ½ year. They had the Source code leak on a conputer ONLY with the Windows XP firewall, and I really can't imagine this is the protection they usually use? To add on the whole Blizzard thing: Chances are, Blizzard as a company will spend less time worrying about putting out a solid product, since the core team who originally put out their three best products (Diablo 1&2, Starcraft and Warcraft) left the company to pursue other gaming venues. So in that regard, my point that Blizzard stands for a solid gaming product may fail.

Note that I didn't say Blizzard cares about the gamers out there; I thought I implied that they cared more about a trouble-free PRODUCT. A product with less flaws = more revenue down the line, because the average consumer gains a trust for that particular line of product. In the case of Blizzard, Ensemble Studios and Valve, the products are, on the whole, fairly solid (i.e. bug free, solid mission types, overall good gaming). In the case of Valve, they also actively supported user created mods which ended up in a larger consumer base. Better consumer base = Better business. Now look at Atari, with their release of TOEE. This game is completely bug-ridden, and they made no plans prior to game release of work for a patch. The end result: a fan base that will be weary of the next product Atari puts out, and poor sales aplenty. I guess what I mean to say is this: Valve, in the past, has stood for a solid gaming product and has done nothing to jeopardize that (other than screwing up release dates). Is it REALLY GOING TO KILL YOU if you don't get your hands on this product after the release date? No, it won't. They're doing their best to finish the damned thing. So cut Valve some slack, and just let them do their jobs. I mean, look at all the times you had to turn in a term paper (for those of you currently in college)-- didn't you ever work on a project and find the alotted time to complete was too small? C'mon-- it's the same deal here.

After reading all these posts it's plain to see what this is adding up to. :) Nothing has changed! Obviously this isn't doing anything horrible to Valve becuause OBVIOUSLY the game is incomplete and this "source code" is the same way... "incomplete". I know programming and there are TONS of calls in this source to files and code packets that aren't there. Granted this may be the bulk of the engine itself but who cares!? Without the rest of it, it means nothing. So... Valve, I think, is using this predicament to give themselves an out for being late on the release of HL2. The "hacker" thought he would be hurting Valve more than he actually did. I think the hacker is real, the situation is real, and the hype is a big advantage. Anyone who truely knows business knows that this is, or rather could be, a very good thing for Valve. They didn't PLAN this to happen but they took advantage of it. Now that they have their support and their critics, they know EXACTLY who, where, and what their customers are and what they're looking for. They're planning for the future people! It's almost TOO obvious!!! :) The hacker simply provided them with a means to get there. When HL2 was revealed at E3 the popularity skyrocketed!!! They were under so much pressure to get this game out to the millions of fans now dying to play it. Being the excelent company they are, they wanted to come out with the best of the best which eventually led them into a corner. If anyone is at fault here it's WE as consumers. When they realized that they couldn't possibly pump out a game that would meet ALL of our expectations and then some by the expected date of relase they lost control. This in turn pissed off this so called hacker, causing he or she to believe that Valve was lying and making false excuses. Its not the case of letting the companys get on with it... Thay can have all the time thay need to write the games and test them before releaseing them on the public.. I think the point is that a games company should'nt promise dates that thay can not keep regardless whos fault it is. We all would rather the TRUTH about the game being late than some story. Regarding release dates and the untimely release of games:Many game companies have separate departments for development and advertising. As with the case of Blizzard's Starcraft, the marketing dept. goofed on the release date; they probably just consulted the software engineers and went ahead with a speculation. As is, if a game company released a product that had obvious flaws and bugs on time, they would still be hammered upon by the gaming community-- not lauded for their efforts of releasing a game "on time." It makes more sense for the company to publish a game late, with as few bugs as possible. I mean, look at Ensemble's Age of Mythology and their motto: "We'll release it when the game is done." And then look at something like Troika's TOEE: The fans are going nuts complaining their asses off. Just be patient, let the game companies do their jobs, and stop whining that they're being greedy for releasing a game "late." Get used to it.

Delays have been an issue for aslong as pc games have existed, and there is nothing we can do but to wait til the game is released.

Valve has handled this VEEERY poorly. They had no chance in hell to realese the game when they said they would. ill give the hacker that. Especially the SCRIPTED scene with the door that gets blocked dissapointed me extremely. And, yes, I think people will buy the game even if a free (and suckeh) version of the game is out for free. And that Valve is using this as an excuse to delay the game even more (I think they will even delay the april release) is kind of pathetic. They have to change the source code a bit, and then they have to rewrite the game in the new code. Excuse me, rewrite WHAT game??? It wasnt even 1\10 finished! This aint THAT much extra work!!! Even worse many people think someone like this should get a job because of his skills. (Insert rolling eyes). Disturbing indeed...Been reading some of the posts now, haven't got 30 hours to read the rest :) And it seems half of us either like or dislike VALVe. I don't know if VALVe is a bad company or not. I haven't played so many games made by them to tell yet. What I do know is, that Half-Life 1 was, and for many more years will be the definately most played, most modded, and most loved game around. The games universe was definately moved quite a bit up the ladder when the game got released. I still remember the day I first ran the introductory run with the tram system under Black Mesa, and saw how incredibly awesome the entire environment was. And the story-line, with lots of little tasks to complete, instead of the doom'ish kill demon, kill one more demon, also appealed to my liking the game. About hacking, I can't say I admire him/her that much. I have never really liked people who try to use their skills to harm others. The person who did this is obviously smart, or VALVe wouldn't have published the information, but I think he should have used his skills somewhere else. Develop a kick-ass game, for example :) Downloading 'fake' games is something a lot of people do. And I am not a saint either. The problem is, that it is so easy to do. But I will definately NOT download HL2! I feel a need to support VALVe in their hard times, though I feel they will get over this in time. But I of course regret that the release has been delayed because of this. Most of us do. The post is growing long, so I'll stop now. Only advice: complaints are fine, as long as they are constructive... Pro'bly gonna get flamed now by sum1 lame :D That's just how it is. C ya all online when HL2 arrives!

I dont think Valve deserves it, sure they have pushed back the release date a few times but that is just because they whant to make a great game that will last as much as the first Half Life.
And you cant e so naiv to think that a game is an easy job and is finished in 6 month. Codemasters once sad that a game takes about 18 month to make when you have all engine scripts and coding, and then if you whant a bugfree game then it will take a little longer sometimes much longer then sad but that is just because they dont whant gamers to complain about whanting a patch and fixes.

Well if this supposed full game (beta) or whatever is downloadable on Kazaa/Bittorrent then it is compiled. I hope Valve gets the last laugh, there is no telling what has been done to the source code and there is a plethora of buffer overflows that can be ran on win machines. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those "betas" are destructive. That would be hilarious if you ask me. All of the sudden 250,000 pc’s simultaneously show the blue screen of death. Better yet maybe some master boot record corruption.

The soldiers still go over and shoot through the window, no matter where you are. Even when he pushes the fan; you walk up to it, and it does it on its own (you can walk right through that part of the blade). You have to do everything in order. Kill the headcrab, so you can push the fan, so you can turn the fan on, so the enemies will spaw and come at you.

Man there are some serious idiots on both sides of the arguement here, I mean, if there are people like Niotex asking for naked dog pictures when dogs are naked in the first place - except when they're dressed up but thats only in NY, then I guess.. But whether you want valve to burn in hell or hope the hacker gets caught, I wouldn't mind either of them, but I just don't understand why we are still ranting on about this, lets just watch and see what happens, whatever happens happens, nothing we can do about it, if the hacker is real, and he releases the code, well, thats whats going to happen, nothing Valve or anyone can do about it. I'm sure the hacker is no moron so only him and a couple close friends know about it. So he will probably not be caught, but if its real then everyone gets half life 2 for free, there would be advantages and disadvantages to this, and this is where I believe in either of these things happening. There would be a port to linux for sure, it would be supported by the open source community after valve wouldn't support the game anymore - that is if they give up, if they are smart, they will not give up. But something tells me if Gabe is a real dumb ass, which he might be if it just slipped out of his hands pretty much, then maybe he would cancel the project and go back home to sitting in front of the tv with a big juicy mcdonalds hamburger and a table full of food. But if hes smart, he will continue work on the project. Releasing the source code, a beta and the 'gold' version of HL2 isn't really going to do anything, besides piss some people off.Valve is going to re-code the net code to be incompatible with its old net code. It will revise other code to make sure hacks that worked on the leaked/stolen version incompatible on the official version. This is just a piss-off for valve. The main reason why people are going to buy HL2 is for the mods and online gaming. People making mods for the leaked/stolen version will quickly be caught or be condemned by the people in the community and of course leaked/stolen based servers won't exist, you have direct access to their IP. In short, this is just a piss off to everyone (including myself) who has been waiting for the game to be released; now we just have to wait a little longer... ALSO This just gives everyone out there another reason why Microsoft programs are horrible for business. Integration is _not_ the way to go.

i am really getting bored of this, valve coming up with some story, then covering it up with lies and covering up those lies with even more.
and this is exacly what they get, if they said the relese date is like start of 2004 and released it now it would be all good, but if they say the release date is now and push it back then u get some stupid nerd that snaps and hacks it and releases it.

They can delay for however long they want, for whatever reason they want. You damn conspiratists are like a bunch of old women. Look, someone screwed over Valve cuz they didn't want to wait. Now Valve is having to deal with the fact that multiplayer is screwed for the time being, since anyone who knows programming can find every back door, or even make they're own back door with the source code. Multiplayer is the only thing that kept Half Life going so long. They know that if cheaters ruing multiplayer, then HL2 is f**ked in the long run. No one plays a singleplayer game for so many years. It's the multiplayer that keeps it going. I hope the hacker gets f**ked over royally for screwing over Valve and all the gamers like that. The Pre-Gold version really isn't that big of a deal. Full Version games have flowed around the internet since the beginning, and really hasn't hurt gaming at all. It's the f**king online cheaters that will cut HL2's profits short of it's potential.

Well it seems to me that this is some major bull and if the source code is released it could do a good bit of damage to valve. I hope the whole game is released - why? because i actually felt mad at the hacker; a company that uses fellow gamers (hackers or otherwise) just to cover up their late send into the gaming world can just -- they betrayed us gamers by using us to cover their mistakes; I will not stand for this betrayal. Hey folks:Deadalus, I think you hit the nail right on the head by saying (paraprase) that this will indeed NOT be the death of Valve if this guy/girl happens to be telling the truth. I, for one, will DEFINATELY NOT miss the TRUE version of this game if it comes to stores in November OR April, or anywhere in between or after. Neither will anyone in good conscience, or with a dial-up connection (both of which I have). Also, everyone seems to be forgeting that Valve has already made USD $6 MILLION(!) on this game already, from ATi. That's a pretty hefty chunk of change! Of course Valve is going to release this regardless of wether the hacker's story is true or not. In fact, while Vivendi was insisting that Valve would have to re-write a considerable portion of this game, resulting in an April-ish release date, Valve was INSISTING that they could still release the game in time for the hollidays. Let us also not forget that ANY game can be freely downloaded, via BitTorrent or Kazaa or a hundred other sources, or, simply burned to CD and given away, freind-to-freind (or, fiend-to-fiend) it has happened all throughout the history of first-person shooters (shoot, Id even gave away coppies of Doom and Doom II, and also made "share-wear" versions that were MEANT to be given freind to freind. Sure, they included an option to buy the key to the full version, but no one did that....) None of the companies who's games are available this way (well, everybody) are suffering because of it. Sure, Half-Life 2 is the most anticipated game of all time, and so MANY would jump at a chance to cheat Valve (and the rest of us, the community) and download the aparent "Pre-Gold" version that this putz is touting, but, by the same token, many MANY more will still by the REAL version when it hits stores. Wether or not it differs from this aparent free version. Enjoy!

Let's hope that should Valve catch this person, they will hire them so that this won't happen again. Banning a person like that from computers would be a waste of his (obviously extreme) talent.Also, I don't really see how this is going to be the 'Death of Valve,' as obviously a large portion of the gaming community chooses to purchase games even with the readily available options of BitTorrent and Kazaa. People are making too much of a deal over something that, although it IS a big deal, is not as catastrophic as everyone seems to have lead themselves to believe. I really do feel sorry for the people who devoted so much time to the making of Half-Life 2, but I think that they need to realize that they are making way too big a deal about it. As far as down loading the source goes...if this guy is telling the truth, I will download the source code myself as I am a programmer (to some extent at least) and I could definately learn a lot from it. As far as buying Half-Life 2, I also plan to do that (Collector's edition probably too...I loved Half-Life) because I really do support Valve. I don't really see the big deal to this. I mean, if I didn't want to pay for Half-Life, I could just wait 3 days after it was released and get it off of BitTorrent, and so could anyone else. This will (once again, providing the guy isn't lying) be a nice step forward for the programming community, as many people will be able to learn from valve's secrets.

I couldn't give a toss if some Microsoft game got stolen, or some big film before its UK release. But i actually really like Valve. They gave me HL, possibly the greatest game of all time. So when some little hacker faggot steals the code, and stops the release of the game by possibly 5-6 months. it makes me incredibly pissed off. We should be playing it right now.

theres lots of stories going around about this HL2 bullshit. I'm starting to get sick of it. Valve shouldve came clean once they found out the sourcecode was stolen. Heck, theres even rumors that Valve set up this whole thing because HL2 isnt even finished and to ring up more attention to make money. valve are f**king the community in the ass so if the sourcecode and everything else is true about it being stolen, then I hope the so-called hacker does release everything since valve isnt speaking the truth. also, why would I buy it and waste $50 on a game that I will only play once. I wont play HL2 multiplayer or any of the mods for it and I will play HL2 singleplayer once so why buy it. I will download this hunk of junk game just to see why this game is so hyped up.

Weird shit, but i still think they should indeed not mess with the community. Just be honest and dont change release date one week before...and if this really is going to happen, lets hope somebody is coming with a good hl2 engine-based game
