my guess on doom3 is that it will come out right when quake con hits www.quakecon.org it is schedueled to have a multiplay up and running. it starts on the the 12th or 9th so chances are that doom3 will be anywhere between the 3rd of august expected release date or the day that quake con starts or ends. if you read the news it says that the game will be ready for multiplay but people will barley have had enough time to practice with it. that might be a sign of a release date hopefully. as for hl2 you are out of luck. gabe will probably post pone his shitty game and if i were you ati fanboys with coupons i would so send him complaints and demand your money back for making you guys buy his damn card for the coupon. better yet send the coupon back as a sign of anger and pitty.

Well having played both DOOM3 and Half Life 2 i must say i am quite dissapointed. Well first, Doom 2 is graphically brilliant but then again when it comes to fps its suffers. On one level there was a Zombie and two "Sganers", the FPS dropped to 18!Also alomst all the game is based indoors like Quake 2! This may be because of the graphics engine but it seriously affects the longitivity of the game. I mean all through it your going from corridor to corridor solving puzzles. Nothing new there then! This is a major snag coz it kills the game, i got bored straight after the second mission when you have to find the reporter. But the atmosphere keeps it going. HL2 on the other hand does both, indoor and outdoor. Whihc works brilliantly, you can lure enemies to closed rooms and then throuw a grenade and happy days! It works very well, BUT its graphically inferior. The lack of qulaity textures really shows when your in the grave yard level. They seem blurry up close, but hey ur not gonna notice that when ur choppin zombies with ur crowbar! Grpahically Doom3 is superior but HL2 has all the other stuff which makes it a winner. As for 2 year delay, it aint gonna affect it one bit! I could wait 5 more, sone the 1st one there aint been nothin as half as good! Remember there a quality level designers working on HL2 AND the AI is gonna be somethin else!!

seriously i think most ati losers should move to canada if they haven't yet. killing alien instects is really not that fun. the game is unoriginal and only the people who got the free coupon are giving a crap because it is free and that promotion was used to sucker you into buying an ati card. the fx boxes said doom3 but they did not have to go as far as a free copy to help promote the sales for it. they know that nvidia makes descent products and that is the selling point.

Im not going to buy the game just because they delayed it for so long and I believe they are just tryin to release it with Doom III. Doom III will own any game comming out, espically H-L2. So unless they are shipping me a free copy of H-L 2 then im just going to copy it like the rest of us.. Source is a evolution of the havok engine havok when valve got it was noware near this complex i belive old havok at it's best was in maxpayne 2. As for graphics i rather the game play online with low ping than not being able to join full servers or them crash out because it's not able to handle the load. It's a weird bonus for hl2 now the games a year old more computers can run it. Flip side is it's no longer as cutting edge as it once was.

I agree with Blade that HL2 is way overrated by now, compared to the myriad of excellent FPS titles already made available, it has very little to add to the genre.It's going to be good, but nothing special. Doom 3 on the other hand looks more promising as a survival horror game, even its real-time flashlight pips most of what HL2 has to offer, technically-speaking

Blade, no offence, but you aint got a clue. I agree on the hl2 looks bad stuff, but you cant knock the physics. Also it wasn't counter strike 2, its counter strike source, its like converting quake 1 levels onto quake 2, it won't look much better, it'll just be playable on the other engine.Also you forget that doom 3 was conceived around the same time as half-life 2 and it had just as many broken promises and tbh i don't think it looks that hot or for that matter plays that hot.

This game is so overrated. It's a game that supposed to come out a couple of years ago. It looks the same as those current games in the market right now. Some games are even better compared to Half Life 2. Nothing special in Half Life 2. Bad physics, bad voice actors, bad character design and storyline. And did you see the Counter Strike 2 video? Man, it's so ugly. So many good games out there like Tom Clancy's Raven Shield and the upcoming Doom 3 and Full Spectrum Warrior. Now those are real games.

boomer, the hl2 engine CANT be more realistic than anything to date, both far cry and doom 3 use higher poly counts on their models and the level geometry. HL2 trades off it's detail for view distance, you'll see when you play it, the only thing it has going for it is it's fairly robust shaders and physics.

The shadows aswell are pretty much the same as they were in the original hl1 release (non patched, they removed em after a while, think the command was r_shadows 1 or somit). Again, they ain't usin any new technology for any light sources, its lightmaps for geometry and point lights for everything else. The shadows are like the ones developed for quake 3, the models make shadows but nothing else, look at the early screens even, you can see that weapons in players hands dont make shadows, it may have been fixed but it was very dodgy. It aint that advanced an engine, fullstop.

yea, it was built from scratch, but when you actually play and look at it the geometry could be from hl1, christ it still uses the hammer editor. It isn't that big a leap ahead if the level editor is pretty much exactly the same. Thats what i was gettin at, its more like a souped up q2 engine than a brand new engine.

Yea, the arguments about the graphics are really becoming rediculous, both of the engines are past their sell by date. Doom 3 was supposed to be released on technology that was developed 3 years ago, while half life 2 is pretty much the quake 2 engine souped up. The texture detail an lighting effects are really nothing to be excited about, the only features hl2 has developed are the in depth physics and facial animation. Whereas doom 3 has pioneered the claustraphobic environment and heavy use of shadow.
These really ain't great leaps forward though, i mean far cry came from nowhere and did what both those games are looking to do.I just see doom 3 being too repetative and short though, all of the stuff shown far and the leak itself look more like a tech demo for an engine, kinda like the quake 3 engine was. An alright game that is soon forgotten. The engine doesn't seem very robust either, shader efeects in it are almost non existant in what we've seen and not many games are going to be as dedicated to indoor environments as doom 3 is. It may have some outdoor bits, but i really doubt they will look that good. The maximum of 4 players aswell doesn't really sell the multiplayer aspect either. The half-life 2 engine however will be heavily modded, its been built that way but beyond that noone else will want the engine, its old and dated.

Well from what i've seen from the graphics side of both these games, i'm not really that impressed with either. Everyone else seems to be, but i've already seen it all before in games like farcry... You want to know what really impresess me graphically? Try the screenshots from the Unreal Engine 3. Now THAT'S something to drool about. Although those are 2006 graphics apparently.And then everyone will tell me it's all about the gameplay and story. Half-life 1 story, great?? Not a chance. It's not a great story in anyway what so ever. The only reason it recieved the massive amounts of praise it did was because it was something everyone had never seen before and maybe that stuck in peoples heads...

Hmmmm, finally a release date. But i'm skeptical about the reasons for this date as it's close to the date Doom 3 is supposedly coming out. To those that have been saying Doom 3 features no outdoor environments, you are mistaken as it has already been stated, that while the focus is on indoor environs there will be outdoor ones, apparently a fair few as the player reaches the hell levels and I seriously doubt ID would write an engine that couldn't handle a variety of environments well, well knowing that in the past thier engines have been heavily liscensed out to other companies to make games. I feel the real question is which engine are the developers going to pick up. Overall i'm still sitting on the fence about these two games as my view on game sequels has been permanently tainted by the release of deus ex 2 earlier this year.

512 mb ddr 333mhz memmorythis will be capeble of running the game wont it?...whit everything on high at 800x600?? becose i dont mind about resolutions.. if u play whit 800x600 whit 2 time anti aliasing.. u wont see much difrence between that and 1024x786...and 0times anti alaising.

Its like watching 15 minutes of a movie and then saying it was $hit in comparison to one that you have fully watched. As for the outdoor enviroments there's no guarantee that doom3 will/wont have these but i will agree that far cry has set a level that will be quite difficult to equal, let alone surpass.

i got the latest doom 3 leak and didnt like what i saw. i have been playing farcry and it shits on the beta of doom 3, out door enviroments are where its at, also doom 3 the beta will only work with one set of nvidia drivers 42.??, extremly old drivers. i will play both hl2 and doom 3 but i dont think either will be all that good. (i wont buy either though) both games are rehashes on old ideas that have been done to many times to count. you need trees and veichls and somthing more than run and shoot in doom, and follow a shit story in hl2

DOOM is supposed to be a frag-for-all fragfest like ut2004. Even with Doom 3 multiplayer, there is still no competition. It doesn't sound that amazing. It's a cheap attempt to compete with HL2.
HL2 still offers more. Doom 3 @ 54.99 is just too much for a game with little extras. I'll still play DOOM 3, I'm just not going to buy the game.

When I said ATI made them to release the game sooner I meant that because the sales of graphic cards were growing low the manufacturers(like gigabyte-msi-...) made ATI to pressure publishers to release the game sooner(Now as u can see everyone is talking about a new VGA card here).

Go check out the graphics ingame for yourself. And when I mean Doom has better graphics, I mean the overall textures and models are better, not effects (since it is too early to judge that).

I think their is a bit of confusion here. ATI is a graphics card manufacturer, not a game developing company. If you are referring to the partnership that ATI has with the HL2 promotion, then I agree. ATI will be screwed if HL2 doesn't come out soon enough because the people with those HL2 vouchers will be screwed as well because there gfx cards will be out of date so i'm guessing that is why Valve is rushing this game out cuz ATI is pissed off at them by not releasing the game soon enough.

I have to be honest, I want HL2 now, its a fabulous Graphics, gameplay,and an excelent story, but i have to say that DOOM its a legend not only because of the story but because doom was the first 3d FPS It was the first game that i ever played and its as its value, and none of you can say im wrong, In the final conclusion they will be 2 great games, but my preference will be at HL2, HL24EVER

I still dunno about stalker, the leak of it (although very old) felt like playin soldner on a hl2 map, the world detail and the physics might be amazing, but the models leave something to be desired and so does the ai. Well they've had a bit more time to work on it, lets hope it hasn't been wasted

I am looking forward to both HL2 and Doom 3, they will both be great games.
HL2 will have wicked storyline and game play (while have not as good graphics)
And doom 3 will have wicked graphics and good game play (but will prob be quite short and lack depth in they story line)Anyways, I still love HL1 and would rather play it (even tho it has dated graphics), then some of the games of today that have great graphics but lack depth and game play.

DOOM3 was actually delayed to include shader operations as before it had none. You can almost sell the farm that HL2 will be longer in gameplay then Doom3. Graphics? Who knows. The delay for HL2 because of the stolen code could also go the way for improved DX9 visuals and gameplay. Early reports at E3 said DOOM3 was intially deemed "Repaitive" with only 1 or 2 enemies attacking at one time....

when comparing hl2 and doom3 grphically you have to consider what the engines are trying to do. HL2 is largely outdoors with MASSIVE levels and huge interactivity. DOOM3 on the other hand is almost always indoors in tight spaces with a moody atmosphere hence it doesnt have to sacrifice detail for performance. The problem is it is rather clunky when compared to HL2. Doom 3 also lacked quite a bit of interaction in the leaked build, you shot lights and their trajectory would stay the same all you could really do anything with were a couple of boxes and the ragdoll system.Maybe they have changed that by now but really all that hasn't been done before in things like far cry or deus ex 2 is the intense atmosphere. Yes, that was deus ex 2, the 2 games play and feel fairly similar to me and have similar levels of detail and features. Either way both games are gonna appeal to different people but methinks hl2 is the one to favour just because the engine is FAR more robust so the settings that can be visited can vary quite a bit.

DL'ing 3 gigs at steam is easy with a decent broadband conection, and its not the graphics that makes the game, itsa the gameplay! I mean, thats perfectly logical, games are meant to be played!So its like this on some people: 1 Graphics,
2 gameplay,
3 story. While some people (like me) like it:
1 Story, gameplay,
2 Graphics You see what I mean. I will propably download Doom 3, but im not looking forward to it, HL-2 I can get free because I bought a 9600-XT, so thats cool. ^_^

Where in the hell do you people get that the game is being rushed? "Rework 80% of the coding" my ass. They probably spent about two weeks reworking the code to ensure online security wouldn't be an issue right out of the box and then spent the rest of the time actually finishing the game. They're almost done, not rushing. People need to grow the f**k up.

Half Life 2 graphics are going to be worse than Doom 3, if you look at the wall textures of cliff's etc in the latest HL2 e3 clip, they are extremely average. If half life 2 lacks in depth, or length, then it will not have a leg to stand on.

The game is going to be buggy and rushed. They should take their time to perfect the utilization of the engine to make a better game. Not just to compete with doom3's deadline.
