first and foremost, doom 3 is based on the quake 3 engine, which is rendered by OpenGL. For those who think Doom 3 uses DirectX (like how UT2k4 uses it), check the doom 3 console just after youve started the gane and scroll all the way up you will see the renderer is OpenGL and all of it's extensions.

at 1:45 8/8/2004

Damn don't you have any lives?
Of course openGl and DirectX can be used at the same time, just not for doing the same thing ... which is delivering the graphics api.

Oh and doom rocks, even on my ATI9000 powered laptop! You friggin fps whores!

Anonymous

at 15:43 6/8/2004

Tell me why on the Retail version of the game it specificaly asks for a DIRECTX 9.0b compatible graphics card? And why the hell would they give you a copy of DX 9.0b if the game didnt use it?? If it ran on OpenGL the game wouldnt require DX9.0 to run, and you CAN'T, i repeat CAN NOT run OGL AND DX9 at the SAME time, never done, and never will be done. DX9.0 isnt a renderer i know that, but provides the APIs to the graphics and sound, just like OpenGL(only does graphics tho). And your all still using cuz words, thus your the lil 12 yearold that know jack about anything.

Calling us N00bz? And you think D3 is an OpenGL game? Get a brain you dumb f**k! How the f**k can Direct X 9 be a graphics renderer, DX9 doesn't render graphics in games, it's simply used to give better performance to graphics and sound card drivers! You really are f**king stupid!

You really are f**king dumb! How can direct X 9 be used as a graphics renderer, man go to any game forum, game reviewer .etc, they'll all tell you that Doom 3 uses Open GL idiot, it was made as an Open GL game so it can run better on nVidia hardware, loser!

Anonymous

to the guy below um i don't what your on but the game is already out and IT USES f**kING OPENGL YOU STUPID LITTLE BITCH ANYONE f**kIN KNOWS THAT, you have the intellect of a 10 year old you dumb f**king piece of shit

Anonymous

at 2:41 5/8/2004

You are all nutz, so what if D3 supports 512mb cards, you can only use it on Ultra settings, and it has hardly any differance then on High. And man you people need to watch your mouths, F that, suck that, man you people all act like lil 13 year olds. Anyhow you people that think its just a Shoot-everthing-in-sight game are wrong. Yes you shoot things, but we do it for a reason, to get the crap scared out us. And you people rambaling on about the crapy mulitplayer, you can have 12 people in one game so STFU. And the game doesn't use OpenGL, it uses DX9 you nubz.

The only difference HL1 and HL2 is the graphics, sound and physics but other then that, the gameplay will be basically the same as HL1 like the puzzles and freeman won't talk etc. I also remember even the devs of HL2 saying last year that it's going to stay true the gameplay style of the first HL and quite frankly, I didn't enjoy HL1 and found most of it rather boring. The only reason why I got HL is because all the review sites were giving it 9/10, 5.0 etc and I said to myself, I can't lose which in reality, I didn't lose because of all the great mods out there that made worthy of my purchase.

Anonymous

at 1:30 3/8/2004

..Well I have finished HL1 and I have seen movies of HL2.. you didn't notice any difference?

"If walking around and shooting zombies stimulates you"
No one ever said shooting zombies stimulates them, I said D3 will stimulate your senses! do you know what that means dumb ass? well it means that the game will be so realistic that you will feel fear (pretty simple ay), by the way I have been putting d3 down (and you are acting as though I was worshipping it). You dumb f**k you must have the intellect of a 10 year old.

"Update: The reviewer on ISOnews has made some nasty claims about the game, and is quoted on the forums as saying: "Guys, I officially disown this firstlook. I've never done that before, but I do admit when I'm wrong, and I am wrong this time. The first couple hours were much more than fun the last 5, and I'm bored to tears now. All the shadow effects in the world can't make up for what is essentially 1991 "run into room, kill spawned monsters, find key, open door" gameplay." He goes on to say that he'd have his review deleted if he could. µ"
-TheInquirer.Net-

Just as i figured. Just like all the DOOM games and Quake games before it. Go in rooms, shoot, kill, get keys...repeat. That was good 10 years ago. Not now. Sweet graphics won't help. And this review of the game seems to coincide with some intial reports of the DOOM3 demo playable version at E3 as soom elect few who played it said it was "montanous"
I hope this review is not true. If it is, what a dissappointment. Then again, DOOM was the same thing. HL2 anyone?

LISTEN UP IDIOTS:

The only reason Doom 3 is made to run better on Open GL, and on Nvidia hardware is because at the last E3 conference, someguy from ATI stole the Doom 3 source code and then released that BETA thats floating around the net. Since then iD have had to re-code the whole game, ground up, so iD in all they're wisdom, and since they hold a major grudge against ATI, decided to make this an OpenGL game? Now why on f**kin earth would any game company optimize a game for OpenGL, oh, wait a sec, Nvidia performs better on OpenGL! Well no-f**kin shit, thats why they decided to make this an OpenGL game and optimize it for Nvidia, despite the fact that if they had made this D3D render game then they would have gotten way better performance on ATI cards than Nvidia on OpenGL and ATI would have kicked Nvidia's ass! But they were pissed off, so it's their loss if they want to sacrifice performance!

hey b-boy, the point of d3 is not only to have fun, but to show of the engine to other developers, so that they can make even more money. Also screw the graphics they still have a long way to come. I'm looking forward to the audio, here's hoping for cinematic quality. Does anyone out their know if the sound is in 24bit/96khz
here's hoping. Should be the best sounding game ever go 5.1 surround.

Doom 3 will suck as much as your momma sucks when she's giving me head! Why is everyone going insane over it, don't getting your hopes up people it's just going to be another, No Brainpower Required-Frag Everything That Moves-Your The Only Hope For Earth-Zombie Shooter type of game! I mean all you do is go around levels blowing holes in skeletons, zombies and monsters while try to complete some stupid objective, and switching weapons! WOW! HOW INTERESTING! ONLY SIMPLE-MINDED 10 year old nerds would like a game like this! And the storyline's all f**ked up too, hell's minions invading earth? wtf is ID on? lay off the gunga, programmers!

Anonymous

at 3:42 1/8/2004

ATTENTION NERDS:
You all seem to think that just because a graphics card has 256MB or 512MB of RAM its immediately the best card ever and is far superior to any other cards. The fact is that no game out now or any up coming games i have heard need more than 128MB of RAM. Thats all you need 128MB in a graphics card, in fact there is almost no difference in performance between 128MB cards and 256MB ones, no I don't know about 512MB cards, SINCE NO ONE f**kIN OWNS THEM AND iD JUST CODED DOOM 3 TO SUPPORT 512MB cards for some reason, there is no point of getting any card with more than 128MB of RAM. A 9800 Pro, 9700 Pro are 2 of the best cards out now, and all that XT shit can suck my left testicle because pretty much everyone knows that ATI XT cards are just over-clocked versions of the Pro cards, if you want an XT version of a card all you have to do overclock the Pro version, its cheaper and it has the same effect.

ReubenDSala

at 1:44 1/8/2004

The only dumbasses that don't know shit about Doom 3 just happen to be everyone, except you guys here in the community!

Go to some game forums and check out threads about Doom 3 and you get the 12 year old CS fan boys that think they know everything saying things like "Doom 3 is only going to have 4 players WAAAHHHH!!!!" but what they FAIL to understand is, is that Doom 3's mods can have MORE players on a server. You kick and yell and scream at them, but it goes through one ear and out the other. If it's not the fan boys crying about it's multiplayer, it's them standing on Mount St. Helens before it errupts and preach to the world that Doom doesn't have a story line, but their lack or research literally drives me up the walls, I give them the sites with the story line and they STILL scream that it doesn't when the proof is RIGHT in front of their face! A lot of people are saying that Doom 3 is going to be short and Half-Life 2 to be longer, but on average it's probably going to take 25 hours to complete on medium difficulty.

R.I.P. Video gamers, you are now the most f**king retarded people on the planet right now, except for the id Software fans.

ouch those are some hard facts. doom3 will rock and so will future games based on doom3's architecture and uses ps3.0. good thing i have an nvidia. btw, the 512mb cards will rock!

Anonymous

at 23:39 31/7/2004

Based on Doom 3 results, who would ever bother to buy an ATI card for at least the next 3 months? Undoubtedly, Doom 3 is going to kick ass especially with Nvidia. Whilst ATI appear to pour infinite resources into Half Life 2 (for little effect, seemingly), why didn’t they spend more time making sure they didn’t suck at Doom 3, or even sorting out the appalling image quality that they pump out in Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow?

ATI quite rightly pointed out to the press, last week, that their performance in Doom 3 isn’t up to scratch yet which will guarantee that their sales will take a disproportionate hit over the next couple of months. Gabe Newell looks like a bit of a tit, now, for proclaiming that Nvidia was just not fast enough to run HL2. Sure, lots of ATI money might have swung his way, but by tying HL2 to ATI, he’s now ignored the fact that the new Nvidia 6 series architecture now kicks some ass and will surely put in an amazing performance.

As in OGL driver, ATI wants to try to improve its Open GL performance. It is aware of the fact that Nvidia rules the Open GL market especially the most significant part of this market, workstations. ATI knows it has to do something about its Fire GL drivers and that Nvidia is way ahead. ATI has to make a radical move and to finally try to match Nvidia in this market as games like Doom 3 are using this API will certainly benefit from this new driver.

Ramming your d**k in a chick's ass is one of the ultimate ways to beautifully degrade and humiliate the bitch!

Fat chicks are special. Why? Because their self-esteem is almost non-existent. They are so desperate for someone who won't scorn them for their pig-like obesity that it is very easy to talk them into spreading their ass cheeks.

"I promise it won't hurt ... I'll be gentle ... it'll be so special".

But as soon as I'm in a fat broad's ass I begin pounding away like a jackhammer! Usually they gasp and cry out in pain and just try to hold on! Sometimes they beg for me to stop! The best is when they start to cry from the excruciating pain! I JUST LOVE IT when they cry! Usually I blow my load in their bowels then and there!

Then I pull out and watch them fart cum and blood!

Sometimes I'll piss on them. Man, you haven't lived until you've looked into the beaten eyes of a bitched that just got violently cornholed and is now getting hot piss splattering on her face!

I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone other than me been to the d3 web page to look at the movie; Cancelled viewing it when you find out u need quick view. Then found out that there is an icon for quick view in the system tray? If u have then the only way to get it off the machine according to apple is to download the full viewer; and then uninstall it. What a pain in the butt. As I did not agree to install it and because u could see this as intrusive and aggressive marketing. Does anyone think their could be a case to sue Apple. Please post any ideas about possible grounds to sue them on; and if there could be any compensation for their actions?

In our in-game evaluation, we did not notice any differences in image quality. However, when we started poring over the screenshots, we did notice some differences. If you look on the floor to the right side in the first comparison above, you will notice that the ATI Radeon X800XT-PE has slightly more aliased floor lines than the BFGTech GeForce 6800Ultra OC. Both pictures were taken at 1600x1200 at High Quality, which enables 8X anisotropic filtering and offers no antialiasing. The BFGTech GeForce 6800Ultra is clearly doing a better job filtering the floor tiles. It's important to note though that we did not notice this when we were actually in the game playing it, only afterward when we put these screenshots side-by-side.

3dc can hold 4 times the texture detail not give 4x the speed. your peformace bonus will be about what we see with shader 3.0 against 2.0... because somthing say's 4 times does not always mean speed.

think of it this way... walls, skin texture, etc will have far more detail and you get a little bit of speed boost as well.

p.s. about what the human eye can see... dvd's, movies, tv, etc actually run at 30 fps now if we are able to increase the viewing screen and have things run at a higher frame rate we get what you would see at an IMax theater (things look 3d with out 3d glasses) now if we slow things down to 30 fps but keep the same large screen you loose the a large amout of that 3d effect. so maybe the human eye can see things diffently at a higher fps (but you need a galactic size monitor to see it... not a computer 19" one)

Sparkfist

at 21:4 29/7/2004

I thought of something else.
Say if we have a 512 mb card and ...no 3dc support in doom3. And we turn 4x AA on. I think 512 MB will NOT be enough . They'll just have to make a tech-breakthrough in AA ;]. Or does it use up to 500 mb on max resolution WITH AA turned on ? Dunno. But i thought of this because i experienced it myself once. In Max Payne 2 with a 128 MB 9800 pro. I set the resolution to 1600x1200, everything ON, anisotropy -maxxed, AA --4x ---and when launching i get a 'not enough video memory..something' message. It said it would require around 200 mb to run it properly (can't remember the number exactly). But it WAS enough with AA off ! So i'm thinking about the same thing in doom3.What do you thing people ?

Sinisterambo

at 20:10 29/7/2004

Maybe the game was meant to have 3Dc imlplemented from the start. I think its been taken out.

Commie

at 18:45 29/7/2004

Hey m0zes, thanks for the reply. Most times I get attacked...lol...pricks.

Yeah I didnt mean that it will be 2-3 years before we can actually play it in a full uncompressed format just that with the price of cards, that I might be able to play it will be 2-3 years before I will be able to afford a card that has 512 mg's...shit I busted the budget a year ago on a 4200 TI which is all but obsolete now.
My card that I bought a year ago is now a min. req. to play games these days.
I am getting a new card when D3 comes out. Probably ATI this time...

Sorry but i readed that in an article on video games like 2 years ago... i thought it was true(the human eye can only see 28 fPS)

if thats not the case bah f**k it

BTW KLAAS nice article (http://amo.net/NT/02-21-01FPS.html)

so can someone tell me whats the peak of a human eye

Anonymous

at 9:44 29/7/2004

No, but you will get at least 10-15 frames faster

Anonymous

at 8:48 29/7/2004

sounds like you copied that from the ati site or somewhere. they say upto 4x the detail but u know it will be nowhere near that. i run farcry @ 40 fps, so u say with 3dc in a future patch i will get 160fps?

Anonymous

at 7:2 29/7/2004

3dc is not just a "uncompressed texture" it is so much more...

It is the first compression technique optimized to work with normal maps, which allow fine per-pixel control over how light reflects from a textured surface. With up to 4:1 compression possible, this means game designers can now include up to 4x the detail without changing the amount of graphics memory required and without impacting performance.

now this will include skins, walls, sky and everything you see... it will improved detail and lighting effect to the next level. have you ever played doom or half life and looked at the texture of a door or wall. it might of been good back then but it sucks right now. this will add more details but with less of a performance hit.

now the question you need to ask will there be enough games using it??? if not then shader 3.0 will be a better investment.

Sparkfist

at 2:38 29/7/2004

I don't thing that uncompressed textures will look oh sooooooo much different from comressed, with a proper compression method is applied.Of course it will look better, but by a small degree i think .
Doom 3 textures will be of much higher detail and resolution than in any other game currently available, but i saw a similar example with compression in ut2004. Set 'decompress textures' to 'True' and watch the performance drop. But the textures will look somewhat nicer. But just A BIT ! :)

Sparkfist

at 21:49 28/7/2004

As for the topic at hand, it's not surprising to have such over-the-top system requirements for Doom III. ID made this game, this engine, which is waaay ahead of it's time. ID's engines have been always used by numerous games for 2-3 years. So this can actually become the basis for many future titles, when a 512 MB card will be quite typical.

And you're telling that there's NO difference ,say, between 30 nad 60 fps ??? Dude - you ever played anything at >30 fps ? ;] the difference is huge.
Or go see an oculist. (<30 fps leads to excessive eye-strain) LOL.

yellowbrickSOAD

LOL @ the guy who can't percieve more than 28fps.

Sparkfist

at 21:21 28/7/2004

People... have you ever thought that Doom III engine just might NOT support 3Dc at all ? ID's games were never specifically optimized for any hardware. So if ATI 'forces' 3Dc in the next Catalyst release it'll just crash the game/glitch/etc. (as ever). Such a performance difference is the result of hardware superiority in this particular game -- you'll have to cope with that ! It's always been like this. There can be only 1 leader.

Anonymous

Oh my god, DOOM 3 WILL HAVE A MULTIPLAYER YOU TWATS!

Anonymous

at 17:26 28/7/2004

what is everyone talking about??? the first doom 3 beta demo showed that the fx 5800 was faster than the 9800 pro... now we know that this is not true and infact the fx line can not run shader 2.0 with out a performance hit. all of these demo programs are set up to use the newest 6800 drivers, now if we wait until the game is out we will see ati make a driver update for doom 3 that will change things (nividia in turn will do the same for hl2... because i know that the ati card will better from the beginning as well).

so both cards are good... the drivers just need to be updated to run under games that were made by using the other company.

this is something to think about if you are looking to buy a new video card.

ati x800 (or better) needs a power full cpu to run it at full power (AMD 64 to a P4 extreme edition) with every web site the best ati card with an AMD 64 3400 + cpu (set at a high iq) will out perform the 6800 (same card level... E.G. 6800 GT to X800 pro)

now does that mean you should buy an ati... no... if you do not plan to buy a brand new motherboard cpu and just want to add it to your good AMD or P4 (2000 to 3000 level CPU)system, then buy a 6800. you will get better performance out of it than with any ati model

now what is the fastest (and even if you look at a doom 3 machine (with the high iq) it would be an AMD FX-53 with an ATI X800 XT-PE video card. but who has the money for it... for us average high end user a 6800 will do fine and be better but if we already have those next gen cpu then get ATI.

Bah! I can barely justify the money I plunked down on my 128mb card - unrealistic to expect that even the 'early adopters' among us would have a 3D workstation graphics card. I believe a peasant uprising is called for.

ok so the human eye cant distinguish anything over 28 fps.......play quake 3 at 30 fps, then play it at 300fps, it plays LOADS faster and feels great instead of mumbling along at a snails pace

Human eye can see a maximum of 28 Frame per second

so as long as the lowest frame rate is over 28, i dont care if it does 40 or 60 or 80 FPS max

most new games are thats what always sucks. you gotta wait a year5 before you can get a proper framerate on thge latest games. its always the same.

DOOM 3 is doomed! wait for half life 2 - at least youll have a decent multiplayer option.

Doom3 is meant to be single player you fool, people who want a MP game will buy other games for MP - any PC gamer who knows anything about PC games will not buy Doom3 for its multiplayer, but because its gonna be a classic single player game.

On a slight change of note, Im so glad a decent game is coming out at last thats not based on WWII or stealth!

JOHN CARMACK JOU POES

Anonymous

at 5:14 28/7/2004

If DOOM3 had 3Dc support, it would make ATI cards run it faster. Methinks Nvidia would not let this happen. Ever. They paid too much money to allow this to happen. HL2 on the other hand and FarCry will support it fully. Expect to see those games run quite faster then Nvidia cards when it's implemented.

lOOP

at 4:59 28/7/2004

John Carmack would never let this happen. Period. Nor ould Nvidia. And the new deal with Creative labs. Boy. READ IT AT Beyomd3d.com. This is f**king us consumers. Becuase with deals like this expect to see more companies doing shit like this with ATI, Nvidia, Matrox etc.

"The good thing to know is that driver is coming and ATI might get closer or even faster then Nvidia, it would be safe to say that it will at least get much closer performance wise than it's able to do now."

"no UT2004 is an old game now with old engine , FARCRY have more scores on 6800 hardware woot"

CryTek just inproved performance for both ATI cards and Nvidia cards and will release a patch 1.3 that fully supports 3Dc. As both cards already run FarCry now almost the same, with 3Dc you will see ATI cards running it faster again at higher IQ.

We are all losers in this Ati/Nvidia war, will we soon have to buy two cards to be sure the games you buy will work smoothly with graphics on full?. If the graphics card rivals get their way we will (is this going to turn out to be a console war like fight but with pc cards? will we wake up one day losing the reason many of us buy pcs because two companies own the pc games market and don't realy want to be compatible with each other, we are seeing the start with microsoft directx what is the chances of directx10 coming out before xbox2? none because pcs cannot be allowed to be to far ahead of consoles. Also what about the software manufacturers will ati owners buy doom3 if they know the graphics/frame rates are poor, will nvidia owners buy hl2 for the same reason? so will the game makers loose half there markets. I am an Ati owner and will not be buying d3 at the momment until its budget, until then i will p2p it until i feel it justifies me buying a new card, the same for hl2, so when it comes down to it they have both lost my custom anyway, am i the only one thinking like this?.
Until the software manufacturers wake up and forget about making more millions over there millions and do us all a favour, not get on there knees with there mouth wide open waiting for a injection of what ever Ati and Nvidia throw at them. does ID and valve know they are now just graphic card bitchs?, someone should tell them please.

jojo

why did not they support ATI ???
by using ati compression it will be greatest for ATI's owners !

Thorn

at 0:50 28/7/2004

Oh yeah, Nvidia sucks bigtime if they stop games like Doom III using compression, seriously why hit gamers performance just for the sake of a puny alliance, if there is a feature that will speed up the game for ATI users then it should be used simple as that!

Thorn

at 0:48 28/7/2004

I just feel sorry for all those people like myself that went out and forked big bucks for a 9800 XT before they announced the new range of cards! I know my 9800 XT will run Doom III just fine but if I had only waited another 4 months I could have a 6800 Ultra in my machine instead :( Of course there isn't much point in upgrading now, everyone should wait untill the next proper release of PCI-E cards, then you will see what performance is!

Maybe 6-12 months down the track they will bring out cards with full native PCI-E support, then I will worry about a new motherboard, RAM, CPU, and a new 3d card !

LOL that lsat paragraph just adds the icing to the cake, but it is true how Nvidia (effectively) buy the GFX rights to a game.
I remember at the start of Deus EX : Invisible war it comes up with some Nvidia how it's meant ot be played bullshit but from benchmarks the ATI cards licked the Nvidia ones.
This is turning into a dirty cold war on the GFX scene

hey commie, i don't think that you will be waiting 2-3 years for most gamers to beable to crank d3. I mean look at the major titles that have had high spec requirements, Q3, UT2003. Many people bitched about the “overly high specs”, but guess what 12 months later they too were enjoying these engines in all their high end splendour. When you consider the fact that intel should be releasing a new cpu in the first half of 2005, this would bring down all other cpu prices (both amd and intel) making the high-end cpu’s accessible to all. You never know maybe ati/nvidia were holding back there high end products until d3 was released that way they might release a 512 mb variant (that would be very nice).

Just imagine 2-3 years from now you will be able to play this on its best setting.
No problems...

Usually the case is that they write the software for the hardware. Im glad they've tried this! Way to go id.

i just laugh at your useless nonsense anon about the partial precision. Its funny because the new ATi cards use partial fp precision, and they dont even support SM3.0 the reason nVidia cards are slightly slower than the ATi card is that they dont use trilinear optimizations and the new 6800 line uses a full 32bit floating point precision along with SM3.0, dont get me wrong i love the graphics wars. if ati or nvidia were out of business then the price on the top of the line cards would be 7-900 instead of 500
and as far as a home pc being able to pull 50 fps on doom3 with settings maxxed i would love to see that but even on top hard ware people will only be able to get about 45-50 fps.
your average home pc(ie one out of an HP box or something) would be lucky to be able to run this game, as those things are big ass POS's,
i remember reading the specs on this thing
recomended was somewhere in the range of a 3gig proc, 1 gig ram, 128 meg 5700ultra or higher vid, like 8 gigs hdd space broadband, and a 24-bit sound card with 5.1

Anonymous

Hopefully, ID will not give in to pressure from Nvidia and at some point include ATI's normal map compression. It has the potential to speed up games like this that rely on NM to produce better quality rendering, and thus shouldnt be excluded just because of a contract with a rival company. Only the end user will suffer, and being one myself i can say it sucks large pelican pecker.
