The British never mounted an offensive due to a lack of material. Having the men to use is not the same as having them combat ready and being capable. The British fleet was in shambles; it was nowhere near capable of being used as an invasion fleet. Also, how can anyone bring current politics into a conversation about the people that history has dubbed "The Greatest Generation." Whether you like Bush/America or not is inconsequential. He has nothing to do with WWII. (As much as politicians claim credit for, none today would dare make such an audacious claim.) The anonymous poster below me is right, in one respect, though. The fighting in the West was like fighting with toy soldiers compared to what the Russians and Germans did in the East. Historians estimate Russian total casuaties (civ and mil) to be anywhere from 40 million (40,000,000 - one of every 4 people) to 100 million (100,000,000 - about half of Russia's population). Truthfully, no one really knows due to they way Stalin's regime covered up as much as possible. American, by contrast, lost 405,399 lives (www.ambc.gov). Some sources give 600,000 as a more realistic estimate. This is from both fronts combined. Germany lost about 10 million, China lost about 12 million. The British lost close to, but probably under, 1 million. Japan's losses were probably around 2 million. Man, you guys are all ignorant. I'm an American with a degree in British history that was centered almost entirely on the WWII period. I am pretty much obsessed with the Western Front. Yes I am an American but I have studied enough about England and enoough in England (Oxford study-abroad program) to see myself as a pretty dispassionate, objective person on the war. I wrote my thesis on the cooperation of the US and the UK in creating the Army Rangers after the British Commandos. To Dan, as an American, I already know how ignorant we can be. Yes, many of us are arrogant and stupid (Bush got reelected didnt he?), but dont throw us all together or else you are not only being ignorant like the people you accuse, but also prejudiced and simple-minded. Don't make the UK look bad by making silly ignorant statements in response to the American ones. Bombing at night was much safer and less demanding. The British had it much easier. BUT it was the Americans who volunteered to bomb during the day, so it isnt that the Tommies were cowardly. We were best friends who depended on each other. We knew what needed to be done and who was better suited for what. It was important to do maximum destruction to Germany as a whole but also to have precision bombing of specific targets. The Lancaster didnt have the technology to pinpoint bomb, plus the Mosquito and Lancaster were both very good against being detected by radar, so the British were a great choice to do night bombings, as they were pretty invisible - explaining why they could fly 4 times as many missions. The Americans on the other hand were more suited for daytime bombing. We had a bomber that could repel fighters better than any bomber in the war (the B17 is supposedly responsible for shooting down more planes than any other aircraft in the war). And don't forget, at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 it was the British who had to come in and save you. I think you are also forgetting about the British victories in North Africa from 1941 onwards. Don't forget, the Germans were a very technically advanced and well trained enemy. They brought not only new weapons but entirely new tactics into the field with them. They devised the concept of using airborne troops, new air combat tactics and using tanks to spearhead advances. It was easy for America to come into the war because Britain had already gained the intelligence about all these things, not to mention first-hand experience of actually fighting the Germans. And talking of getting into France, no one could have done it if the Germans hadn't invaded Russia. That was where the bulk of thier forces were engaged leaving the Atlantic wall seriously undermanned.
