Well, I'll try to post a usefull comment here.. I already use the full product, and I use a Asus deluxe Sli, an 6600 non Gt, the realtek ALC850 and not a lot more.. I have full suport for the audio driver, the graphic and stuff.. Still have some ? at the device manager, but it sure works without any glitch until now.. It's basically a windows 32 ported to 64, but it has the windows 2003 kernel, and it's because of that more stable.. It now has 2 program files, a 32 bit and a X64 one, and for 32 programs emulated, the task manager shows a *32 after the name of the program.. Regarding 3d or 2d, it's a lot faster, mainly because of the adicional allocation explained by another user :)Cheers.. In regards to the blue screen of death that some users posted below, I have not seen one :) Btw, a way to search for coompatilibily > http://www.3dvelocity.com/articles/win64compatibility/win64softlist.htm and http://www.msfn.org/comments.php?shownews=12595 Hope it help.. I recomend it.. I already use it a my main OS.. Think like this.. If you have a 64 bit processor, use it.. Change the present time.. If you don't use it.. No one will worry about it.. Because they will suport a little bit more 32 bit.. Change mentality :) And that goes for linux algo.. They are both 64 bit :) Btw, if you are scared, use partition magic, create a 10 gig adicional partition, and install it ther :)

Probly a stupid question considering this is a Microsoft product and maybe an even stupider one considering the intelligence levels of 90% of these posts on this comments page but here it goes anyway... when it's released will it be free like a service pack or will Ms extract more cash out of our pockets?

Hmmm, i don't know myself, however a good guess would be, considering companies like dell etc are getting the software as we speak, at the same time as windows2003 64, which is released in 10days, a counter can be found in the top right hand corner at this address: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/x64/default.mspx

im afraid u can't run windows64 on a none EMT (just released) pentium 4.Real 64-bit is usually a cpu with a none x86 design, as we all have to admit, x86 is a bit old, hense the athlon 64 transition to 64-bit programs, because new architectures are only based on 64-bit

I run IBM i series servers. They're true 64bit, a lot faster and have been around much longer but it doesn't mean i don't appreciate what AMD is offering, it's very important for users and businesses all round to make a transition. ATM true 64bit is for bespoke software.

64 bit is old news, we have been running an alpha 64 bit processor on a copy of compaq TRU64 unix for about 7 years now. next intel has had 64 bit processors for at least 2 years in the itanium 2 systems. REAL 64 BIT not this AMD wank selling a 32 bit processor with extended registers and calling it 64 bit (intel wanted to wait and release a real 64 bit system to the mainstream but where going to loose support to windows if they didnt bring in 64 bit using the same crap as amd) for the itanium it no longer uses a x86 core or cisc system but an epic system (explicet parrelle instruction set) so just so all you c**k wads know amd and windows have killed 64 bit and slowed us down in the process, sort of remindes me of OS2 in the day, when windows released their first fully 32 bit os, OS2 had a fully 32 bit os out for years the only 16 bit crap they had was built in support for the windows os.

Fek, sorry again.I believe the delay in 2k3 was because they were waiting for the completed service pack 1 to exit beta ( as it was being made in parallel to the 32bit version )

Sos bout double post, been readin some more. There was an unreal2k4 patch, but it does not fully optimise the game asif it were made in parallel with the 32bit version. Also windows 2003 64 hsa gone gold, the actuall commercial release is in approx 20 days, there's a counter on the website and you can download a complete 6month trial (wiht i noticed about 1000 difference in the version number from rc2)

The beta was very buggy. However, part of the reason you haven't seen imporovement in games is driver AND game support. 64bit games arnt around much and drivers supporting them until recently have been very scarse. However, running simple file extractions etc, windows 32bit couldn't keep up. I believe you could happily get away with less than a gig of ram, aslong as it was of decent speed. There's no way the OS takes up much more room. It also comes with a few improvements like the released version has all the features and security of sp2. It has dx9.0c and mediaplayer 10 etc without upgrade. I'm hoping i can trade in my xp32 for this os. It's surely fair :P

Anonymous at 3:3 2/4/2005 The system requirement would be a 64bit processor (like the AMD 64fx series). Its basically your windows xp which sends/computes twices the amount of information in one go compared to the regular one.(since the processor/COMPUTEr has larger 'ears' 64bit ones in place of the 32but ones). but I hope you get the point - you need this 64bit OS if you have a 64bit processor.

Actually, Mac OS has loads of games on it, and I don't mean like MineSweeper and the like. Go to the apple site and check out the software store. Lots of games for Apple, even Halo! And with OSX based on linux, you can possibly even run some of the linux games on there? (not sure about that last part, though I do know you can get linux programs working).

I agree with you Daniel about other os's being good, but at the end of the day windows xp virtually works with every bit of software you chuck at it is simple to use, new hadware is easy to install and almost all pc games work with it. The mac os is easier to use but it only works with mac's and linux is definatley not for most computer users, although it is getting better.

I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome, just another thought about Windows 64 bit. Considering Microsoft expects people to run Windows on servers, did they have a 64 bit version of 2003 server out pretty quickly, or is that still in the works? If it's not out yet, that's just pretty slack from the "market leader". But if it is already out, and has been for some time, then that is a little more like it.
|
daniel
at 5:26 1/4/2005

Also Justin, Doom 3 is now available for Mac, and has been for a little while now. By the way, there's a lot to be said for other operating systems like Mac os and Linux. Alternatives aren't bad just because certain companies choose not to support them, though it would be nice to have more games with Linux and Mac support.
|
daniel
at 5:24 1/4/2005

I notice that someone here made a comment about Linux having 64 bit support, (right before trying to start a flame war, apparently). But it's true that Linux had 64 bit support almost from the word go. The point here is that once again, Microsoft took the better part of a year to catch up with technology, whereas Linux integrated it almost right away. Also, there was a 64 bit patch for the Linux version of UT2004 out a couple of days after the 64 bit Linux too.

I don't see what you all have against windows, i bet you all made those posts using your windows xp, or on internet explorer, or while running msn messenger or using word to spell check it. Microsoft is the best! Better than crap ass Mac. What's the point of owning a comp if there's no games to run on it?PS Congrats to Mac owners -> Doom2 was just released on Mac (not Doom3, that comes out in like 8 years or so!)

linux woops all your arses apple computers are designed worse e.g. if you upgrade a part in a apple you usually have to do update the o/s or buy another one whereas windows & linux you dont as they are better all you need are drivers. lets see only dumbarses use mac as they cant cope with windows. :P like come on how hard is it. i know of a music teacher that thinks its hard to use any of the windows versions but she loves macs. so i say this come one apple just give up on computing e.g. your o/s and focus on areas that you have a biggger market that way you'll make money instead of losing it :P also i cant wait for ibm to bring out there cpu's to the mainstream....

um actually, if all u guys havent noiced, windows xp doesnt give that blue screen anymore unless YOU do something to it. I have nvr had a problem unless there was a virus, or somebody was a frickin idiot and did something.I will give apple the good note for not having as many viruses and crap, but thats not because its that much secutr or anything, its just that such a small percent of ppl use it and its not worth making viruses for

I have Mac OS and I like it better than XP. Let me lay it on the line, Apple make better designed computers, Windows has the simple advantage of being the big guy... so more software is compatible with it. I'll admit, I am not missing all the spy-ware,ad-ware,firewall,anti-virus software that I can't get with MAC... because I don't need it :D

I bet this software is gonna be up to the balls in software protection. No doubt it will be cracked soon though and then I can get it downloaded instead of lining JEW Bill Gates pockets any further.
